Hi all, how do I start Win98SE in safe mode so I can run scandisk and defrag?

surveyor1:
Turn on the computer, instantly press and hold the control key down after the memory test is finished.
Incidentally, you do not need to run the utilities in safe mode. If the defragmenter restarts continually, or scandisk returns error messages, shut down the programs running in the background by pressing and holding the crtl+alt+delete keys down.
With the exception of Explorer, disable the other programs running.
Best wishes

You can also run msconfig and choose to restart in Safe Mode. However, you have to make sure you go back and change it again before the next restart or it will continue to load in Safe Mode until you do.

Tap the F8 key while booting up
and then choose Safe Mode at the
options that will be shown.
With a Compaq PC you can use F5.
Best to use Safe Mode then your
AV program etc won't be trying
to run in the background.

Or in msconfig you can set it to turn on a startup menu and give you a choice to boot into normal, safe mode or in 98 DOS...

OR
You can edit the system.ini entry to say shell=defrag.exe instead of shell=explorer.exe, just make sure to back up your original system.ini file. You'll also have to remove its' read only, system, and hidden attributes.
