Hope this is in the right forum. I have a strange problem with cd-rom. First some system info: HP Vectra 133,Intel mobo, quatum HDD 1.8Gb,nic card,ma****a cd-rom. This all started when I wanted to install new modem in system. First off I had to install used cd-rom, after install all seemed well, system recognized cd-rom etc. I then installed modem US Robotics PCI Winmodem. Here is where the problem began. Upon starting pc the new hardware found program opened looking for drivers. I inserted the installation cd changed path to D got error message saying D was inaccessable.Checked system to make sure cd-rom was in device manager, retried just loading installation cd with same results. I then loaded another cd to see if it would load but the same error message came up D inaccessable. This really has me puzzled. Why cd-rom will read only this cd and not others. One other bit of information. The first cd seemed to freeze when I tried to exit so I just removed it from cd tray. I then got blue error screen advising me to reinsert cd with serial number of cd "please insert cd-rom with serial number xxx-xxxx". I have gone as far as my knowledge allows time to turn to the professionals. After posting this I loaded another game cd into tray to see if it gave same results. This is where it gets bizzare. A game I had on my other system came up which is very strange as this system has never ran the game. How can this be? Although the cd-rom was used on other system and was used to load this game.

You might try booting with a disk that loads cdrom drivers (i.e. win98 setup floppy) and check if you can access a cd from dos.

Regardless of circumstance, I would remove the new hardware and check if the cd then works (Q: what has changed?).

while this doesn't sort out the problem, it might narrow it down a bit.

This machine is running Win95 and I do not have a boot disk w/cd-rom drivers. Now what? Also another strange event just occurred. I tried to load a game cd as a test to see if cd-rom would read cd and after cd-rom spinning up and light on front indicating activity a totally unrelated game title appeared. To be more specific, the title was a game I had installed on another system using this cd-rom. Does cd-rom have memory? This game has never been installed on this system so how did the game screen suddenly appear after loading another game. I went to my computer screen to check drive D and it showed the open program with icon showing the game from other system. This has me totally confused.

Ok, first thing, the blue screen error who received when you removed the disk is pretty much normal when you remove an open, active CD. So the drive was actually beginning to read the disk you inserted. What it really sounds like is that it is either dirty or you aren't giveing the disk enough time to spin up before trying to access it. win95 can be extremely slow when trying to access a CD, especially if you are not running the busmaster drivers for the IDE channels.

So try running a cleaner disk through it and/or giving it a little more time to spin up.
