i work at a university and one of the students came into me with a question - i want to see if i can help her and i'm not sure what the heck is on her computer.

she's using outlook as her email program and she isn't getting any email when she is offline. the second she is online she starts getting flooded with email from people with messages like "you sent me a virus". Has anyone heard if this is a virus or not? If this is a virus, does anyone know of a fix?

I don't have any anti-virus software on my computer here at work (go figure - it took me forever to get an upgrade from windows 3.1)...so if any of you know of a website i can check out with more info, or if you know of a fix, i would greatly appreciate it.

danke.

There are a few free anti virus checkers out there

house call for one
http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/ go here and have her check the status of her comp. and then we can go from there.

http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_downl.htm and here is another one.

we can't really fix something if we don't know what it is to begin with all we can do is guess.

Klez is a virus that will pin the blame on someone, even if they doen't have it.

It steals both the from and to addresses when it sends out infected mail....so what happens is the ISP who monitor for virii and those who are irate start bombing (bouncing, returning, etc) email to the person in the from line, who is quite likely virus free....

So someone who is popular or someone with a limited address book can start a chain of events that can lead to a lot of returned email to one person....
