My old hard disk won't start with my Intel 430VX MB.
The BIOS detects the hard-drive, but the boot sequence stops when the "starting MS-DOS/Win9x ..." prompt should appear.
There's a 32Bit hard disk setting in the Bios "integrated peripherals" section, maybe my hdd doesn't support 32 bit IO ???
Please help me out.
If this is a first time boot with the new Mother board.
Win98 may be getting lost ..
It is trying to use the old M/B settings with the new M/B.
Try tapping F8 while you boot and start in safe mode.
Then remove all the old drivers and device controllers.
Including Hard drive controller .
You may find it easier to get win98 reconfigured if you start the first time with a new Mother board with the system stripped to bare bones.
M/B , Video, Hard drive, ( remove the sound, nic, and any other cards from the system)
BTW If you are installing a new video card also.
Go into video properties and set the video to basic vga and plug and play.

Actually some more info would help. Is this a new board or an existing one? Is an OS already installed on the hard drive, and which one? Have you double checked the cables to the drive to be sure they are correctly oriented and jumpered?
If the drive already has an OS installed, try booting to a start up disk for that OS, and at the command prompt type sys_c: using a space in place of the underscore ( _ ) used here. After the System Transferred message type fdisk_/mbr. After a few seconds nothing will seem to happen then you'll see another A:\> prompt. That should get the drive ready to boot, assuming everything in BIOS is OK. The OS will not be affected.
I would go into BIOS and set Defaults, either Set BIOS Defaults or Set Optimum Defaults (it may be Performance Defaults) then check to be sure the hard drive is set to autodetect and floppy is correct. That should take care of any problems with BIOS settings. Factory defaults will usually boot without much trouble.
I have a board with the i430VX, but it's not set up right now so I can't check it to see what settings might have an affect. It will only cache 64MB memory by the way, so don't try to add more than that once it's running, you'll slow it down.
