Hi, all. Someone in our family has shut off the address book that usually appears in the lower left area of Outlook Express 5. How do I get that turned back on (open the window again) so e-mail address are displayed there?
Thanks much,
RC :)

In OE, under View, click on Layout...then put the check back in "Contacts"..I think that's the right one to check..it's one of them in there. I have been in that setting dialog from time to time because I actually like the Preview Pane stuff. But, if a "suspicious" email comes in, I have to go into Layout, turn off the Preview pane, check the email for message source, or just delete the email (usually what I do), then go back and put my Preview pane back.

Kay brings up a valid point re:suspicious e-mail.It is a safe practice to turn off the preview pane due to the vulnerability of Outlook Express to viruses.
Also, back up files that can't be easily replaced, along with you OE address book, OE folders, favorites, etc. At first, it will seem as tedious as a trip to the dentist for a cleaning, but in the long run will pay dividends.

Ok, I'll do that. Thanks to both of you for the help.

He he kay I didn't realise you like to live sooo dangerously! :D

The contacts list is useful in OE; but having it enabled also means that MSN messenger will always load too (if it is installed), which I hate. You can get a similar layout in Foxmail, without the MSNM trigger and previewing should be safe as long as you don't activate HTML by default.

Hey, I guard my "home" email addy like it's my bank account number or something! So, very rare that I get something "suspicious." Good call on the Address list..because I didn't know that about Messenger. I did install Messenger at one time and disabled it from StartUp immediately..but no one else I knew had it..so it was only useful to tell me if I had mail in my Hotmail box. After about the fourth time that MSN pestered me to upgrade it..it stopped working for that, and I uninstalled it. And, after reading some posts here at PCGuide about hackers using the "instant message" stuff to get into people's puters, I am happy I did get rid of it.
