Hi all

One of my system files has been infected by a virus which cannot be repaired. The only way to fix it is to delete the file and replace it with a clean copy from my Win ME installation CD. I know how to use the "Extract System File" tool in Win ME but it asks for the destination path of the file and I don't know exactly where on the installation CD the file I'm looking for is. The file I need to replace is "kernel32.exe". Can anyone tell me where the exact location of this file is on the Win ME installation CD? I know that it is probably contained in a zip or cab file but there are so many it's like looking for a needle in a haystack!

Any help greatly appreciated
Dan Hawkes

Why don't you use the search facility. Click start,Search,Find Files or Folders. Make sure it is searching the cd drive. You could probably download the file from Microsoft.

Check http://www.antivirusebook.com/database/tmp/badtransvirusremoval.html and http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32badtransb.html

kernel32.exe is part of the badtrans virus infection.

If you ever come across files that need replacing, but searching for them is a pain, you can try
http://www.driverguide.com/
you'll need to join, but there's loads of stuff there.;)

In the source path type Win9x , in the destination type windows\system.

If you still have problems extracting, then open a command prompt and type DIR ( CDROM drive letter ) Kernel32.exe /s-this'll search the entire specified directory and display all results.

Considering the damage that Virii do, my suggestion is for you to back up your personal data and wipe the drive then do a reinstallation; you'll never know what damages the virus did, nor wether any future error's you receive are due to it or some other reason.

kernel32.exe is not a system file, it is badtrans.....with this and your other problem I think you have both klez and badtrans!

I would wipe the drive and reinstall.....
