1) xp doesn't seem to remember previous placements of windows that have opened. When I was using win98se I could open a window, size and place it on the screen then minimize it. I would then maximize the window and thereafter whenever I opened a new window it would remember that size and placement setting. I'm finding this isn't the case with XP. Whenever I open a new window, or new window over top a exisitng maximized window, it's placed somewhat arbitrarily on the screen. Sometimes favouring either the left or right side or top/bottom. Never the same place twice. I always took this "intuitive" aspect of windows for granted. Are there any XP "pro's out there that have experienced this and fixed it up? I've done some research on XP, faq's, tweaks etc. but haven't come across this niggly yet.

2) Another ZA question. I using the ZA freebie (the latest upgraded version) and no AV program. Everything seems fine except that ZA will just stop allowing net traffic for 2-3 minutes. Sometimes if I refresh the particular web page a few times then ZA will turn back on, if not then I have to close ZA and reopen it. I used ZA freebie with 98se for about 2 years and never had this happen but with XP it happens about every 30 minutes. Maybe I should go back to the previous version of ZA?

Outside of these two little problems I'm really digging the XP scene and never plan on going back to 98se :)

I have installed all the critical updates.

Thanks in advance!

Actually I think that you ZA problem isn't a ZA problem, but might be an XP problem...XP tries to autoupdate the world when idle and I think tat it and ZA might be confusing each other...try a little XP tweaking, like turning off all unecessary services, auto-updates, etc.

I agree with mjc.

as per your 1st question- in order for a window to remember it's size position try opening something and then "stretching it to the size you want-> then close the window.

the next time it should appear the same size and position.

If it won't remember the settings the old Win9x "trick" of holding down the shift key when closing it might work??

sea...I was trying that to no avail.

paul...good one, that worked with pretty much everything. I keep a internet options shortcut on the taskbar and so far that's the only thing that won't open where I place it when doing the shift function. That I can live with so I thank you and offer you a beer if your so willing.

MJC...I've done a few tweaks as per a website I found that chronicles only xp tweaks but no change there. I remember installing a windows xp update that dealt with firewalls or something like that. It was late and I wasn't paying that much attention so maybe I should've left things be.

Anyways, thanks all for the speedy response on what tantamounts to be rudiment problems.

chow for now

Here's an alternative way of resizing your browser by using javascript. Just post the whole script (as one line) into your address bar and press enter to execute. Scripting will have to be enabled in your browser of course.

If you like it you can just add it to your favorites; and if you really like it you can add it as your home-page and have it automatically set your browser size whenever you start the browser or go to home.

This line will set the size to 640 x 480 (but you can change these to suit yourself).

javascript:window.resizeTo(640,480);

Just a bit of fun really :D
