I've put a 400 mhz K6-2 in my old gigabyte 586t2 motherboard (big thanks to all concerned at the forums who supplied the jumper settings!) and I'm wondering what sort of performance increase this will give me over my old pentium 200 mhz chip.

Combat flight simulator is noticeably faster, am i looking at around a 10-20% system speed increase overall?

Also, will this upgrade bring about a big increase in temperature? The motherboard doesn't show the cpu temperature and I'm still using the same fan and heatsink as before, is this upgrade large enough to create thermal issues or am i still in the comfort zone?

(can't get any info from AMD site on temps or fan sizes etc)

cheers and thanks as ever

It's probably too late now, but to compare before and after performance, Sandra (http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/sandra/) is a very easy to use benchmark program. The standard version is free. There are better benchmarks around, but I just use Sandra most of the time.

If your system is running perfectly stable on the hottest day of the year, I'd guess your current HSF is sufficient.

I would increase the heat sink and fan size. The cooler the cpu runs the better.

Thanks for these replies, will get round to changing hsf in time, seems safe enough for now though.

Thanks again
