Today, in a span of 4 hours, my PC restarted 5 times, over 4 different power supplies in 2 different rooms. and i am clueless to why it happened ?

now let me elaborate.

PC was in kitchen, a strange noise came from the case and PC restarted.

PC was in kitchen, I plugged the pc in a new socket. everything went fine for an hour, a strange noise from the case, pc restarted.

PC was still in kitchen, plugged in another socket, and opened teh case. Mouse froze at the time of windows logon screen. this time there wasnt any kind of noise, but the system didnt restart, it hanged.

I moved the PC in drawing room with its pants down (open case that is :D ), that same clicking sound and with it followed the restart.

One more "click" sound , restart after using the PC successfully for about 15 minutes

I thought the sound came from hdd, coz there is no other 'moving' peripheral in my PC.(no, my home is free from rats... so i am sure it was the hdd that squeaked :D )

As a result, i booted with winME bootdisk and run the Samsung Hdd Diag utility for any possible errors. Surface scan and several other tests passed. Also, i tried to access every nook and corner of hdd by typing dir /s for all the drives. This tests made sure that hdd is 'fit'.

At present PC is in the living room going on smoothly from 2 hours with case open.

Any other tests i should try ? What maybe the reason behind click sound and restart? I am a bit worried.

Hope hdd doesnt scream "restart, restart" again !

What about fans (case, cpu cooler)? Some machines have been known to restart if the cpu fan craps out.

Sometimes that click sound is the
power supply re-setting itself. (as
in "tripping")

Causing the system to re-boot itself.

A true overload can cause this or a
PSU that just can't handle the job.

headachesabound: Fans are working fine. Both at the back of case and the one on cpu.

rd, you are right.... it must be the power-supply which is making the "click" sound. I forgot to mention that yesterday, when i started my PC in the living room for the first time, the power of entire house was cut off, maybe due to overload. The electrician told me that the "mains" switches were faulty and hence the power was cut-off. Will replace with new-ones today.

Thanks for replying, else i would be still continuing with different tests suspecting hdd as the culprit.
