In another thread i've read this from iisbob:
be VERY sure you run smartdrv first-or it'll take 30 minutes or longer to delete the Windows directory!!
This item always annoyed me a lot, many times i had to use deltree over the Windows folder and go to take a beer or two before it got completely wiped. I thought there was no solution.
Could explain how to load smartdrv? it's not on the Win98 boot disk, so i'd like to know from where do i get it and what parameters it needs if any.
Thank you very much for this one iisbob!
smartdrv is loacated in C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE and can be loaded in the config files config.sys, autoexec.bat or run from a DOS command prompt. It is small enough to add to a boot disk. A list of the switches can be obtained by typing smartdrv /? at a command prompt.

ok, found it. Seems as the optionals parameters are not necessary, just running smartdrive would do.
The only thing needed is to copy smartdrv.exe from Windows directory to another (C:\ for example) if you intend to reuse it later.
I'll try this next time i delete a large folder from DOS.
Thanks mjc!
Actually if you have defined a path staement (which should be done by one of the config files) then it should just be able to be run from the win folder by typing smartdrv at the prompt..

I know what you mean, but i don't wanna set it up to load every time.
I just wanna run it once in case there is a disk with valuable data and a screwed Windows installation, and I don't have a way at hand (like a second HD or partition) to move the important data over and format.
For example, i had this laptop with little free space, which had a damaged Windows, some driver files on the hard disk that i wanted to keep, and only one partition. I did not have a recovery cd, so i wiped Windows folder with deltree and installed the common Win98, then used the drivers that were on C:. But it took an hour or more to wipe the Windows folder.
I load it from the autoexec.bat on my bootdisk...
