I just recently built a computer and i'm having lots of problems. It seems new software(mainly games) will not install. My DVD drive would just shut off and my computer would freeze. Thinking it was the drive i took it out and rplaced it with a new one. My computer is still having the same problems. Also the computer won't even let me copy large files (100mb+) on to the harddrive from a cd, it does the same freezing thing. Is this a problem with my hard drive? My drive is a IBM Deskstar 120GXP. The rest of my system is Atlon 1700, Soltek 75drv5, 256mb pc2700, Radeon ViVo, and its running Windows 98 2nd eddition.

Have you installed the VIA chipset drivers?

What about sound card? onboard?

Is DMA enabled for the drives?

What size power supply are you running? What else is in it besides what you have listed (CD drives, floppy, other cards)?

I have installed the VIA drivers, i'm running on onboard AC-97 audio(soon to be upgraded), an Artec 16X DVD drive, and a floppy drive(not sure of the make) i took from my old 486 gateway.
