Hi im using Internet Explorer 6.0 on win98se but whenever i try to view an active x control in a web page it comes up Your current security settings prohibit running active x controls on this page.As a result the page may not display correctly. But when i change my security settings to low it still comes up. I tried looking the microsoft help site but it doesnt say anything about this. does anybody have any ideas how to fix this???

Hi jcandsc-
And
WELCOME!
In your security tab did you click on the "custom level" button?
This is where you will find options for ActiveX controls and plugins.

Internet Explorer 5.x/6.x

From the IE menu select Tools | Internet Options
Click on the Security tab
Click the Internet Zone icon
Novices: Set the slider to Medium

Advanced users ONLY: Click on Custom Level button and enable the following options**:
"Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins"
"Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting"
"Active scripting" (you'll have to page down to find this one)
Click OK in the Security Settings box and again in the Internet Options box to save the new settings.
Close ALL browser windows, then open a new window so that the new settings can take effect.

***The key here may be to "Close all browser windows, then open a new window so that the new settings can take effect"

Sorry jcandsc
Not sure right now what else to suggest. Hang in there though as I am sure an "ActiveXpert" will be along soon. ;)
Question: If you just click "OK" on said site when warning comes up, does it in fact "display correctly" anyway?

Have you cleared your cache lately?

Are you quite sure that you are looking at the settings for The Internet Zone and have everything that relates to ActiveX (including download which hasnt been specifically mentioned) set either to enabled or to prompt.

Be cautious about allowing any unsigned controls unless you totally trust the site - this is better left as prompt than enabled.

Also, are you running any firewalls or popup blockers, etc.

Ok yes im positive that im in the internet zone section. All the custom options are set to enable or prompt and i dont have a firewall or popup blocker either, download accelerators or anything like that. And yes i have cleared my cache latly but not before the problem started.

Is this happening on one or on many websites? If just one, could you post the url so that we can check out the source.

If you totally trust the site you could try this. Go to the Trusted sites and move the slider to Low (if the slider is not there click Default Level). Then in the Add this Website to the Zone box type in the domain name (eg www.your website.com) and click Add. Uncheck "Require server verification for this site". OK your way out.

Repairing IE could also be worth a try; nothing to lose there. This is getting intriguing!

Its happening on more than one website. Although Here (http://www.nokia.com/phones/5210/demo) the above message comes up but on all other websites they just fail to load

Yes, good one Paul...When i press ok it comes up loading but after waiting for nearly an hour it didnt load and its supposed to load in 10mins.

That one really had me confused....10 minutes?

(Edit) woops, snuck that in a little late. ;)
jcandsc- You may have to re-Install IE. I have read that some corrupted files can cause this...Wouldn't do it just yet though.

OK. After going to that url: the first prompt was whether to allow scripts to run (because I have scripting set for prompt). It then loaded the page (its about 300KB) for about 3 minutes (and I'm on a slow dialup) (without clicking on anything else on the page) and then I got "Do you want to install and run "Cult3D ActiveX Player.... etc."

Do you at least get to this stage, where you are prompted to allow the download of the control.

The next prompt I get (I have just about everything set to prompt by the way) is "Do you want to allow software such as ActiveX controls and plug-ins to run?"

At this point I went and checked the C:/Windows/Downloaded Program Files folder and sure enough "CultCD ActiveX Player 32KB" was there as installed (not corrupted etc); so check there to see if the control was downloaded properly in the first place. If its corrupted then delete it and start over.

About another 5mins after allowing the software to run I get another prompt "A script is accessing some software (an ActiveX control) marked safe for scripting. Do you want to allow this?" (as before I also have all scripting options set for prompt).

On the page (under the picture of a phone) "Demo on" then tells me that it is loading.... . At this point L-click on the image rotates, R-click zooms, L+R-click moves it. Couldn't get it to change color though.

So the only other thing I would add is that you have all scripting options set at least to prompt and be patient between the various stages. Well you sound patient anyways :D

Hi folks,

I'm using IE6. I just tried the Nokia site and it wont load for me either. Have everything enabled and all settings on low. Who knows, maybe it's a problem with the site.

Got in right after you Paul, :)

Couldn't get it at all in Opera so you maybe right ... or else there is just lousy bandwidth at the site and things are timing out.

There's an activeX control on my isp's homepage http://home.iol.ie/ which I know works - so you could check that out if you like.

Looks like Nokia could be the problem. Have a couple more problem pages you could point out?

The Nokia site is acting wierd. I have a fast cable connection and it still took a long time to load. (I have similar settings to yours Paul-Mostly set to prompt).

jcandsc- Almost sounds like it's time to repair or re-install IE. And you may want to think twice about sending "error reports" to M$.
I have read you may be sending them more than you want to. (The bastages!)
I actually have my error reporting disabled in XP!

jcandsc, revert back to IE 5.5, it will solve almost any problems you face in IE 6.

A lot of chat sites need java (JVM/JRE) as opposed to ActiveX contols and there have been legal conflicts with Java in IE6 (especially when using the edition that comes with XP when it is no longer installed).

When IE6 upgrades first came out, there were a great many problems created in Windows and other applications. I would be inclined to eradicate IE6 (you cant go back in time by uninstalling it) and then install IE5 or IE5.5.

Make backup copies of your Favorites, Address Book, OE-Mail Messages etc beforehand if these are critical for you.

IERADICATOR (http://www.98lite.net/ieradicator.html) now downloaded from HERE (http://www.litepc.com/buyieradicator.html)

http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win95/msiexpl.html used to provide downloads of all versions of IE but seems to be a dead link - maybe OK later - but you should be able to get a version of IE from your Win98 installation CD or from your HDD if the cabs have been installed on it.

Personally I have stopped going to M$ Update site - everytime I do my computer starts acting weird; following the last visit there I now get bits of Japanese in Google and Office Appplications - don't ask me why).
