You can get it from http://java.sun.com/ (the site is down for maintenance right now).

You need it to display and use applets (mini-applications that use java files that are used in Games, News Tickers, Chat Rooms, etc) so that these are able to work correctly in your browser.

You can usually unzip installers wherever you like. I would copy and paste the original download somewhere safe to start with. Then unzip the original copy "somewhere" (a temp folder for example or even on your desktop).
After unzipping you will need to open the setup file (commonly setup.exe). At this point follow the instructions from 5 to 9 HERE (http://java.sun.com/getjava/install-windows.html#4).

After installation you can delete all the files used for the installation in the temp (or other) folder that you used - since you can repeat all the above, should the need arise, from your safe copy.

I am not familiar with that version of Java virtual machine for windows
here (http://java.sun.com/getjava/manual.html) is the link for the latest Windows 1.4 version at Sun's website. You can download it to your hard drive, and install it from there

Hello w2wLord

If you have a CD-RW its a great idea to download ALL installation programmes to a CD-RW disk kept specially for the purpose.
Make a folder system that makes sense to you. You might have top folders named "Utilities", "Games" etc with sub-folders say "Disk Cleanup", "Single Player" etc.
I unzip them from there to a folder on the C: drive named "00 Temp".
The "00 " [double zero(& space)] makes Windows put this folder at the top of the list. Windows puts numbers first and letters next.
After you've used the "setup.exe" Prog to install the software you can delete all the files from this folder.
At any later time you could uninstall the software and re-do the unzip and install, because you still have the original Zipped installation file. If you had re-formatted your drive and re-installed windows you could easily replace these programmes.
Some of them I put in a folder called "Things to install after re-format". You surely know how hard it is to remember which things need re-installed. Sound card drivers, AVG anti-virus software, Netmeeting etc.
It's even more important to get a system of backup with a disaster recovery prog on a floppy disk for when you can't get windows to boot.
