I'm considering upgrading from win98 to win xp home ed. My question is, what exactly does having a licensed copy of win98 mean. I have win98 on system that was purchased used. I just don't understand all this legal gooblygook of m$. Does this mean that xp will not install unless I have licensed version of win98 and if true how does xp know? Does it ask for a product id or key to verify license before installing? I do have a licensed version but it is on another system.

If you have a version that it will update, it means that you do have the product key and can reinstall the program whenever you want. Of course, that isn't true of XP even if you have a licensed version, you have to check in with MS each time you install to verify that you are the legitimate owner. I am not sure if XP requires you to prove that your copy of Win98 is valid before it will install, but it is likely that you can use a key from another copy if it does.
