Hi helpers,
It took me several weeks to trace a map for Xmas Island (NOT the one in the Indian Ocean) but the Xmas Island in the Pacific (where I took part in the H-Bomb tests in 1957). The map I found was exactly right and amazingly adaptable .PDF.
The original search was particularly difficult, because the Xmas island in the Indian ocean is much better known. Sorry about the background info. but you will now understand how difficult it has been to find and how important it is to me.
Guess What? I LOST my original files and bookmark BUT I see that there is a mention of them all in C:\Windows\Temporary Internet\Directory but they are not "accessible" as they stand. {I think I may have altered them during a "cleanup" operation}.
Can anyone save me several more weeks' work by suggesting how I might use these files to re-access the original thread.
-----they are .gif files and the one I really need is *.pdf, which is not recognised by Acrobat in its current state.
Thanks
Ray

I am afraid that I don't understand what it is you are asking, but I am pretty sure I don't know how to do it anyway. Nonetheless, I was wondering if you did a Google search for Christmas Island. I just did and found a number of likely looking links including this one:
http://www.cvc.org/christmas/micronesia.htm
This site refers to both Xmas Island and seems to provide much more info about the Pacific one. The search terms I used on Google were:
"Christmas Island Pacific".
Good luck,
Budfred

Hi Ray
I'm not one to boast about backing-up, to say the very least, but I do have my Favorites backed-up.
They're all on a single 3.5 floppy disk (Cost circa 5p!) so, you know what to do when you get them back - which I sincerely hope that you will!!!
Do try and post the results of your efforts, please.:) :)

You could try R-clicking on a few of the files in the TIF folder and selecting Properties to see if you would get a path that would lead you back to where they came from.
When you mentioned taking weeks to trace a map.... I had a picture in my head of you literally tracing it onto tracing paper!! :D
You could also search for your index.dat files and open them with Notepad/Wordpad. It can be surprising how much stuff is retained in them as long as you haven't been shredding them with a cleanup utility.

Howdy
I'm afraid I have no more to add to help with your question.
Just a couple of links
Map (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/australia/kiritimati_island_77.jpg)
Christmas Island Bomb Test (http://www.janeresture.com/christmas_bombs/)

Hello All,
Firstly, my incapacity was simply that a fortnight ago I had 2 teeth removed and the dentist made one hell of a mess. It's been agony since then but today I revisited him, and after several excuses he has given me some antibiotics, and I have some affective painkillers from my GP.
Thanks again.
Now to the important issue. The links "map" and "Christmas Island bomb test" given by Buck are so good that I'm actually glad I lost my other files.
However, the information consists of moving images, audio files, still images and further links all produced in a very professional way by someone obviously very competent and it leaves me completely baffled.
I added to favourites and customized at level 3 to access offline. Just over 2 hours.
Is it possible that I might be able to understand WHERE thay are on my hard drive, and how can I configure them as a stand alone project say by copying them to a CD-R. I can copy most things using my CD writer but I don't understand where the files are at the moment (which folder) and in what form do they exist.
If this is too involved or inappropriate for the FORUM please let me know.
It would be marvellous to consolidate all the information ( I intend to add some of my own Xmas Island fotos) and make a presentation for my grand children.
PS I celebrated my 21st Birthday on the Island.
thanks again for all your help

Hi Ray, I had a peep at The Christmas Island Bomb Test Page. I don't think you need to go to 3 levels etc; just do a simple "Add to Favorites & Save Offline Pages" first so that as many files as possible can be downloaded to your TIF folder. Then create a folder somewhere and SaveAs "WebPageComplete, HTM,HTML" into it. If any files have not been included you can copy and paste them (eg Forgive.mid) into your new folder.
The reason that some files don't show/play offline is that some of them are absolute links (need to access the files on the web if they are not in your TIF folder) and some of the src's are getting stripped to zerolength strings (in my browser anyways).
You will then need to download the absolute-link files into your new folder and change the absolute-links in an HTML editor to relative-links. You could also just view source, select all, and copy and paste the original HTML into an editor and then edit it appropriately.
Hope the tooth-ache is improving and that you are not becoming an Oil-of-Cloves addict.

Thinking about it, because I haven't use Web Extractors in a while, but one of them could make life much easier for you.
WebZIP 5.0 (http://www.spidersoft.com/) is pretty cool and you get free full use for 28 days - thereafter you are limited to 20pages/website.
And some other Offline Browsing Utilities (http://www.webattack.com/shareware/misctools/swoffline.shtml)

Paul,
Many thanks.
Could you please explain TIF folder/files, or doesn't it really affect the process you have described.
I've got my work cut out sorting through everything, but you can't imagine how much it all means. A very BIG episode in my life, and I've
been searching for years to access this material.
I'll update you for the sake of feedback as I progress.
Thanks again
Ray

TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
I tried out WebZip on the Janresture Site. Works fine and creates an "intranet folder" on your HDD where it stores the downloaded pages and files. Suggest to just start with zero or one link deep if you try it out, because it is large site with a lot of "connections"; you can always go deeper later. If you go deep, you can always pause the task when you are tired of waiting for the downloads (much quicker than using IE) to complete.
Incidentally I found that IE had renamed jpg as jpeg and spaces as %20 in the TIF folder which meant that some of the graphics tags didn't work, until I had either renamed the copied files or the HTML tags that pointed to them.
