:) The cable guy was here :)

I got a Linksys cable modem and router. I'm setting up my network. My main machine and the Acer are getting along fine and loving it. My laptop with XP just can't seem to get with the program. I must have a bad cat5 cable or something. But that's ok. I'll find the snag.

My daughter is downloading music like it won't be there tomorrow! Who knows, maybe it won't!

Cable is a good thing... :)

HeHe-
Good man...Linksys Router, Cable Modem....Sounds like my house. Enjoy! :D

BTW Steve, if you haven't rebooted the laptop since you hooked up the cat5 to it..Give it a try. Good luck.

You might want to shut down all the computers, the modem and then do a light reset of the router and reboot the rest. Then check the router and if it sees the laptop. I assume you should have the protocols installed, TCP/Ip, but you might want to redo them. I assume you know for sure your NIC is working properly and you might want to check it's properties in Device Manager.

I don't downloads lots of music but prefer Direct
Connect, sometimes even Napster (YES it's still usable}.

BTW, the easiest way for a light reset of the router is to remove the power source for 10 seconds.

Hi Budfred, I've been following that thread. I think it'll be quite a while before it is all shut down. Any software that they come up with will be countered by freedom lovers. It's not like software. When you buy a tape or cd, you own it. Not a liscense to listen to the music.

Jaber and Gallaeglagh, thanks for the tips. No joy in the northland. I switched the cat5 cable, rebooted, shut off the router and tried again.

I guess I'll be working on this tonight. Haven't I heard around here how XP pretty much networks itself??

Hi Steve-
You have probably already done this. But can I assume you have gone to: Tools/Inernet options/connections tab/lan settings/...and checked the "automatically detect settings box"?
(Then re-boot) :)

Thanks for the tip. Been there. No joy. It's funny. My main computer, dual booting w2k and 98 pretty much set itself up. I added in the Acer. Win 98 set itself up with minimal input from me. 95 is still out of the loop. Not choosing to participate. I've got about three hours into trying to get the XP laptop hooked in. I've got it to the point where it sees itself, but that's it. I must be missing something, I just can't figure what. I've done all the settings so many times I think I'd be better off just clearing the deck and starting over...

Steve-
Have you eliminated the posibility that some setting in the router is responsible? (IE, by- pass the router and go directly from the cable modem to the XP laptop just to see?)
Also, did you get a 1 port Linksys router with a hub, or are you using a model with a 3 or 4 port switch?
(Where each machine has it's own connection directly from the router)
If I think of anything obvious we're missing, I'll let you know.

I have a BEFSRV41 (router/4-port switch) and my three machines, including 2 XP machines, pretty much ran from the get go.

Hi Jaber,

Yup, that's the router I have (BEFSRV41 (router/4-port switch) ). I don't think it's a problem with the router or cabling. I have switched the cat5 cables in every which config and it's the XP laptop that won't co-operate. I just don't know. I'm gonna sit and ponder. One of the things I used to do when troubleshooting problems with the bowling centers is make a list of all the things I have found that aren't the problem! Sort of proccess of elimination. I once had a machine that was causing problems and a list of 42 things that WERE NOT the problem!

Oh well, this too shall pass... :)

Well, all my tweaking is what did me in. I decided to go back to square one by using the recovery disks. I returned the laptop to original condition and XP really did network itself.

Everything is working great. :)

HeHe- Hi Steve.

Glad you got it running you tweaking wild man you!
I did most of my tweaking after I was already connected to broadband, so I would have noticed right away which tweak did me in! :)

Anyway, now you can go back to your tweaking! :D
Something I did Steve, is kept a list of all my tweaks, and when they were done. Once you become a tweak maniac, it really helps to remember the changes you made over a long period of time.

PS- Glad you posted this, I was thinking of asking yesterday if you got it running yet, and how! ;)
