Hi guys
I have just installed a new hard drive on a friends pc, I need to know how do I now installed a windows operating system on this hard drive ?
When we turn it on all we get is system not found, now I know this because I havent yet installed one. So how do I go about doing this in the first place.
Do I need to format the new hard drive, and if so how do I do that? all the operating disks I have tried do not auto run when placed into the CD rom drive . so how do I install a working system.
Thans in advance.
Desperate.

Welcome to PCGuide!
I am not sure if the drive is already formatted, but it will tell you when you try to install Windows. To do the install you either need to use a Windows startup floppy which will allow the option of loading with CD support or you could try going into the bios and, if it recognizes the CD, you could set it up to boot from the CD. If you don't know how to do this, write back here.
Good luck,
Budfred

Getting into the bios depends on the computer, but usually there is a screen that will tell you when you first turn on the computer. It will say something like "Press ESC to enter SETUP" or press F5, F8 or F10. Look for it and then press whatever it calls for. It will take you to a screen that will require using the keyboard to get through. You would want to look at the settings for the whole system, probably the first option offered. Look for settings that refer to the boot sequence. It is usually set to go to A: first, then C:, but if you go to the second or third one and use your arrow keys (or whatever it calls for in the menu on the bottom of the page), it will have the option to boot from CD if it recognizes the CD. If it does, select it, make sure your Windows disk is in the CDdrive and Save and Exit (that is usually F10, but again it will say on the bottom of the screen). It will restart and should then begin booting from you Win install disk and it will ask you if you want to format if the HD isn't already formatted. Post back again if you get stuck.
Good luck,
