View Full Version : My PC still smells like burned plastic

I posted here about a month or two ago about my smelly PC. The old thread is http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000940.html

I have now AMD certified and recommended Enermax 330W retail PSU. System has one Sunon blower sucking air in and Enermax has 2 fans, other one takes air from CPU and the other blows it out from case. Temps are 45 CPU, 35 chassis/power and 25 mobo.

And the problem is, that the comp won't stop smelling! I have waited for 3 months, and the PC is still smelling like burned plastic or something like that. I am positive that the PSU is as itself working and non-smelling one. The PC works perfectly, no crashes or anything. Stable as rock and I haven't overclocked.

What could be wrong? It can't be PSU (it's Enermax.. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif), I don't have too much thermal paste. How about the mobo or CPU itself? I could just change the mobo or CPU, but I first have to explain to the store where I bought the components, why should I change a working component for a new one.

850Mhz TB, 256MB, Alpha PEP66T with Sunon 60x60x25, MSI K7T Pro2A.

This is a good place for a Stick-Up. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif Sorry, that's an obscure reference to a US TV commercial for a room freshener/air deodorizer. But it's not completely in jest. I think your system just has a lingering odor caused by the previous problem. You may cure it by taking the case cover off and washing its inside surface, spraying it with Lysol or something, and letting it dry before putting it back on. Hope it works. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

At this point I'd start looking over every wire in the thing to see if any of them had discolored insulation, brittle or cracked insulation or any other signs of over heated wires. I might also disassemble the whole works and scrub out the case (letting it dry well before putting it back together). Other than that I'm still stumped....

It could be that the plastic parts used in the Case have always smelled and you are sensitive to it.

Smell started right after I bought a new PC, and I actually have washed the whole room cause of that smell. And I've had this new PSU for months already.
