Here we go:
1) Add a user/users to the Windows 2000 computer to allow the Windows 98 user/users.
2) Under printers on the Win2K system share the printer and give it a name.
3) Add a user under Win98 with the same name and password as the user/users created in Win2K
4) Reboot Win98 and login with the correct user name/password in steps 2 & 3
5) Under Windows 98. (You must have a driver for the printer on the Win2K box) add a new printer. Choose network instead of local nad browse the network for the shared device. After selrcting the correct port follow the rest of the prompts and you should be good to go.

I was mucking about with this today.
classicsoftware, you wrote:

I take it you mean that a Win 98 printer driver must be installed on the Win 98 box. And I have a dozen Win 98 boxes, the driver must be installed on each one individually?
In the Win 2000 printer setup, it provides an option to 'install drivers for other versions of Windows'. If a Win 98 driver is installed this way -- on the Win 2000 box -- does that obviate the need to install a driver on every Win 98 box? Has anyone ever succeeded in getting this to work? Why is the sky blue? Thanks!

Let's say your lucky like me and have a Brand new Lexmark T-612 super fast laser printer.
1) Install the printer on the WIN2K box as per the printer manufacturer's instructions.
2) Under printer properties, share the printer and give it a share name in our hypothetical case call it Lexmark
3) Install the driver on each of the client computers, Win95, Win98, Win ME whatever the OS is. & follow the instructions I gave you for installing a network printer. You will browse the network and under the WIN2K box the Lexmark should appear.
If you share the printer in win2k, and choose to install the additional drivers for 98, your win98 system will automatically download and install the driver when you connect to the shared printer.
So you do need the driver on each 98 system to be able to use the printer, but you will not have to run around with your driver disk to install it.
The same thing applies to Win XP pro
Load them on the server system and download/install across the network as needed
IF They drivers are available !
