For some reason I have just lost all sound on my computer. Does anyone have any suggestions what I can do to try and rectify it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Winston- And WELCOME!

The first thing I would do (if you haven't already done so), is check the obvious.
Your speaker connections, the power supply to your speakers and volume controls both on the speakers and in the software.
(This of course is assuming you have externally powered speakers.)

If all that checks out OK, possibly try some other speakers and also check your device manager to make sure there are no "exclamation marks"or similiar warnings next to your sound controllers.
(Could also be a problem with your audio card/audio drivers etc.)
It would be helpful if you told us a little more about your system...Sound card type, what you have for a speaker set-up, and what operating system you are using for starters. :)

And....Did this happen suddenly, or after making changes to your system?

Hello Winston

If your sound worked previously and you have not changed your hardware or software immediately prior to the problem appearing then:

If your operating system is Windows 98, got to a DOS prompt ["Start>Shut Down>Restart in MS-DOS mode"] and at the "C:\Windows>" prompt type "scanreg /restore" [without the inverted commas and with the single space before the forward slash]. This will allow you to restore a backup of your registry taken before this unfortunate configuration change occurred. [That's provided you have not booted successfully five times since then because it only keeps five copies and if they all include the problem then your snookered].

If this does not work you need to restore a backup that was taken before the change. This would also take account of changes to hardware and software made before the backup was taken.

Before you do the above it would be a good idea to check "Control Panel>System>Device Manager" to see if your sound card is listed but disabled. Bear in mind what you find before you try the above.
