HI ALL,
I HAVE A INTERESTING SITUATION HERE. I HAD A BACKDOOR VIRUS ON MY SYSTEM.REMOVED IT.THEN THINGS WENT NUTS.AT FIRST MY SYSTEM WOULDN'T RECOGNIZE MY VIDEO CARD OR MY CDROM DRIVE. TO FIX HE VIDEO PROB I WENT IN AND RESET MY CARD INTO ANOTHER PCI SLOT AND REINSTALLED THE DRIVERS.
THAT FIXED THAT. THEN I HAD TO REINSTALL MSCDEX.EXE IN MY C:\WIN\COMMAND
FOLDER. THEN I WENT INTO BIOS AND RECONFIGURED MY SETTINGS TO AUTO.
FINALLY I HAD TO REINSTALL MY MITSUMI CDROM DRIVERS.REBOOTED AND IT WORKED.ALL THATS LEFT NOW IS THERE IS NO CDROM DRIVE SHOWING IN MY DEVICE MANAGER.NOW MY CDROM DRIVE WORKS FINE BUT HOW DO I GET IT TO SHOW UP IN MY DEVICE MANAGER? ALREADY TRIEDADD NEW HARDWARE AND IT DOESN'T WORK THERE EITHER.
MY SYSTEM SPECS ARE:P3 633,128MB 133MHZ RAM,48XMITSUMI CDROM DRIVE,16MEG NVIDIA VANTA LT PCI CARD, WIN98SE.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GRATLY APPRECIATED.

Welcome to PCGuide!

First the ALL CAPS is considered yelling here, please don't yell, it is very hard to read.

Next. How did you remove the virus? It is possible that you haven't cleaned it out completely and that would make other efforts eventually futile.

Then, is your bios Setup set for Auto in detecting drives? If it isn't you might try that.

And then, you might want to check in Device Manager again. If your CDRom is working, it is very odd that it wouldn't show up in Device Manager. Is it possible that you missed it?

sorry about the caps. didn't even notice.yeah the virus was removed with solo antivirus.my bios is set for auto detection of drives. i had to reset it myself becuase the secondary drive went to disabled when the virus was activated. and no i didn't miss it in the device manager. i wish it was that simple.

Well I am thorougly befuddled. I have never heard of the device working, but not showing up in Device Manager. Hopefully some of the more expert Geeks here will respond, I want to see how that is possible myself.

If no one else can respond here, you might want to try the Chat line this evening to see if you can get a live response.

Good luck,
Budfred

This is the problem with virus removal tools; or even antivirus utilities-sure they remove the virus but they never fix your damaged files %100; the best thing to do after a virii infection is to do a complete wipe and reinstall, that's the only way you'll ever know for %100 sure that you are clean and that all Windows files are undamaged.

You've already spent hours trying to patch windows after the damage, do yourself a favor and back up your data and reinstall. The registry is already corrupted ( that's why you're CD is not showing up in My Computer ); you could boot into safe mode and remove your CD drive, then reboot letting windows rebuild it's registry information base.

You're never going to know whether or not any error's you get in the future are due to the virus damage or a legitimate conflict with another software program. And no antivirus or viral removal tool can ever effectively fix your damaged files, becuase there is no way to truely determine which files in your install has been damaged when the virus released it's payload.

If that is the case there is either a registry error or a damaged file in the IDE drivers....exactly what iisbob was talking about. Did the virus do it or something else happen (don't try to figure it out, you'll go crazy trying....). I am becoming a firm believer in the only way to "cure" a virus is to kill the patient...wipe the drive and start from scratch. Just too many changes/bits and pieces left around after trying to clean up, to return to the preomfection state.
