I need help here -----
I got this error message while formating 20gb Maxtor HD with 2 partitions on it (with Maxtor floppy disk): "Although the boot track was successfully created, partitioning of drive 1 failed because creation of the boot record failed because there was a device error reading drive 1 absolute sector 422656157 count 1"

If I choose format with no partitioning just one, then all the above same except absolute sector 402667583 count32 comes up.

Is my HD gone bad? Soon after that I formatted another 20gb Maxtor HD with 2 partitions and no problems. Why with this first HD I am having problems to format?
Thanks

Download Maxtor's diagnostic software, "Powermax". It will tell you whether or not your HD is functioning correctly.

Thanks for the site. I did download the driver and copied on a cd because it is 2.2meg in size. When I tried to use it, it says ' must run in win32' why is that? I reformated no problem this time so I used maxtor floppy and did 'copy partition' from advance option. Went into safe mode checked device manager - I got some multiple drivers from way back I used this same HD before I formated couple times so I reformated again and copied all programs from working HD again and ran 'powermax' from maxtor floppy and it did go thru and did few tests including basic, advance and burn run (something like that), all passed. I have no idea why at first I got such problems. Lets hope this HD will behave properly this time. ( I am using now on this sys). Thanks for your help.
