Hey all. I just bought a new power supply and it has a 3-pin connector coming out of it. What is it for?? Looks like it would connect to one of the fan connectors on the motherboard, but why would it go there??

It may be the fan connector to let the Mobo know that the fans are working properly before booting. Many mobos these days come with that ability to prevent overheating. If you give details about your PowerSupply, someone may be able to give you more details.

ive got the same thing on my PSU, its a female connector wich i use to hook up my heatsink fan, so it get its power direct from the PSU.
or if you use the connector on the mobo to power a fan it will read the fan speed and things.:D

The color of the wires themselves will
designate what the plug can be used for.

Yellow= 12V Black= ground Off Color (blue
etc)= RPM sensing. Used primarily for case fans.

This plug doesn't plug into the fan header
on the Motherboard as this location is furnished
these settings by the board itself.

Depending on colors,,,

If it is for an old, I repeat, OLD replacement AT power supply, it is most likely to turn the power supply ON. That is what I have on my old circa 1887 IBM Aptiva. (:eek: Did I type 1887!?!)

Now if it's for a new system, isn't there something about P4 motherboards that have a need for one? I don't know what for though. Is it fan sensing as stated above?

If you don't have a P4 it isn't neccessary to use it. Someone back me up on this??? If I'm wrong, please delete this post from your memory banks... :D

The Pent. 4 compatable PSU will have a
couple of plugs that aren't needed for an
AMD system.

One has 2 yellow and 2 black wires. The
other has 1 yellow 1 Red and 1 Black.

I do have a Pentium 4 based motherboard by the way. The power supply is a 500W by POWMAX. Does this help?

I have the same thing on my 400W Antec PSU with black and blue wires. The connector is for the RPM monitor for the PSU fan you plug it in to a monitored fan header on the motherboard. The fan motor is wired inside the PSU for power.(I dont have mine pluged in it is too short to reach a monitored header)
