View Full Version : Video Card Fan
Ok I purchased an EVGA.com Geforce 2 MX 400 for my Compaq 5310US, and it just has the little crappy plastic "heat sink" on it, I would like to put a fan on it, does anyone know the procedure on how to do this?? Also what will I need, like what size fan??? Will I need thermal grease?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Since there are probably no mounting points or any kind of hold downs on it you will need some sort of way of fastening it.....fortunately ArcticSilver makes a thermal adhesive (http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_adhesives.htm) just for that purpose, it does both jobs, that of a thermal paste and of course gluing the heatsink on.....
So do i "glue" the fan ontop of the plastic heatsink that is on there or remove the plastic heat sink as well?? There are holes through the silicon where there are plastic hooks that hold the black plastic heatsink on.

If the heatsink has fins, you may be able to just screw a fan onto it. Old 486 CPU fans work good for this.
There are also a load of GPU coolers out there, most of them active, meaning it comes with a fan, like the Thermaltake Crystal Orb for example. The Crystal Orb might not fit though. Vantec also makes some good chipset HSFs. If you decide to replace the whole thing, then yes, you will need thermal paste. As MJC pointed out, there is thermal adhesive paste that you can use to stick on. Or, if you find one that you can mount with the pins, then all you need is the thermal grease between the HSF and chipset.
