Hi;
AMD Athlon:950 ; HD-Maxtor -30 Gig;Memory 512 Mb.
I am trying to reinstall Win 98 se.
On surface scan I noticed two bad sectors ;;one at line - two & second at line 13 of the clusters.
Each time I try to Format they stall it .
Let me know how to Format C Drive with these bad sectors on it & can they be removed or fixed ?
thanks

Quite possible that scandisk is having trouble remapping them......if the Maxtor utilities don't help they should at least give some errors, that hopefully will get you a replacement under warranty......

I am still running Surface scan & its taking awfully long --50% done in 2-1/2 hrs; so after that I 'l try Zero fill & post.This drive was bought two years ago & I don't have the receipt now.Will Maxtor honor the warranty at this time?

Followup: after Completion of Surface scan:::::::Bad sectors shown again at location # 2 & 13 row of clusters.
But after the surface scan-- Scan disk ran & it shows :: NO Errors.
Came to:A:\> format c:/s
Warning All data on Non removable disk drive C ; will be lost
Proceed with format (y/n)? Put y & Enter
Came up :::: Checking existing disk format.
Recording current bad clusters.
0 percent completed
Insufficient memory
Reverts back to:: A:\>

I ran the Power Diagnostics from Maxtor::
Installation confirmation : passed
Basic Quick (90 sec) Test : passed
Advanced Test (Factory Recertification): passed

Haven't done Zerofill so far--if you guys observe anything at this stage-please advise.After that I'l go for Zerofill.

Get on the phone can call:

1-800-2maxtor

Even though it passed their diagnostics, if you can't format now, then get a replacement....

OK
I was able to do the zerofill & once it was done the disk ran through the partitioning & the format.
Finally intalled Win 98 se & all drivers without trouble.
Now after this low level format (zerofill)--will this HD work normally or will catch trouble eventually?
Normally the manufacturer's don't recommend the low level format?

Zero-fill is not the same as a true low-level format...it is sort of a mid-level format.

That said, there is much confusion these days because for modern IDE devices a true low-level format is never needed again after it leaves the factory. But, (you knew that was coming) the manufacturers did away with offering true low-level formatting tools, so instead of calling the zero fill utility a mid-level format they decided to call it a low-level format...go figure, :rolleyes:.
