I hope that I’m typing this in the right section…….my apologizes if I’m not.

I just reformatted my hard drive on a Windows 98 machine. After loading all the drivers everything seemed to go good………but my modem wouldn’t dial out. It shows the modem being installed in the Device Manager, but when I hit properties it says :
”Cannot read Port name from Registry” I have no clue how to resolve this. I show “COM 1 and a COM 2 in the Device Manager, I’ve tried installing it on both Ports with no luck, so I’m sticking with COM 2 since my mouse I believe is on COM 1.
One more thing there’s a yellow exclamation mark on a PCI Serial Controller also. I remove it from the Device Manager and it reinstalls itself with the same yellow exclamation mark after I reboot, but I’m not to concerned with it so I’m leaving it with the exclamation mark. All I really want to do is get my modem working again. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Everything that I’m re-stalling is the exact same software and hardware.

You need to find the exact modem name and model
Then get the correct drivers for the card.
The PCI device listed is the Com port for your modem.
Till it is fixed the modem will not work.

It is unlikely that your mouse is on Com1 unless you are using a Serial mouse and most people aren't these days.

Have you tried deleting your modem drivers and the exclamation and reinstalling on bootup? That is probably what I would do next. If that didn't work, I would probably go into bios and disable Com2 and try the whole thing again. I recently struggled with installing a modem and that worked to get it in.

Ultimately the problem with the PCI Serial Controller is probably the main issue, but I am not sure how to address that. I would check to make sure you bios is set to autodetect.

Good luck,

Thanks for the quick responses. I’m using the CD that came with the modem so it should be the correct drivers. “Before" I reformatted I went into the Device Manager and wrote down the type of Modem………it is the same modem that’s in the Device Manage now after I used the CD to install the drivers.
Could I possibly need to add another COM Port ? I can’t remember how. But then again I’m not sure if that’s what I need to do.

I have tried deleting the drivers in the Device Manager by just hitting the remove and then re-installing them, but I’m still having the same problem. If it is the PCI Serial Controller……….How do I install it. I’ve tried the Windows 98 CD and tried just using the Add New Hardware with no results. Is the fact that it’s not installing the “PCI Serial Controller” the problem ?

Still stumbled,

The com port gets added automatically by the driver software, but you may have to take out Com2 to make it install properly.

I would try removing your com ports, the exclamation port, the modem and anything related from device manager and then reboot to see if it can reinstall properly. If that doesn't work, someone else will need to chime in cause I am running out of ideas.

It might be helpful if you posted more info about your modem. If it is a software modem, it may need different actions than one that is hardware based.

The Modem I'm trying to install is a Rockwell HFC 56K SpeakerPhone PCI.
But like I mentioned, I have the CD for it. I'll try removeing the COM Ports now and post back.
thanks for the feedback,

Ok I now have COM 1, COM 2, COM 3, and COM 4. When I try to install the Modem on COM 3 or 4 I get an error message that says "Couldn't Open Port" What do I do.....??

Thanks,

I am unclear on how you ended up with Com3 and Com4 if your modem software didn't create them. That said, I would probably try going into bios and deactivating Com2 after first Removing the Modem again from Device Manager and then reinstall the modem at bootup. This seems to work sometimes to get the modem working.

You might want to post back with how you got Com3 and Com4 before you try anything else though.

It's working !! :p
I finally got it set-up on COM 3. I did a couple of things together so I'm not actually sure which one worked. I went into the hidden files, "INF Folder" then to the "Other Folder" then deleted everything in there that had anything to do with the modem. Added COM Port 3 by using the Add New Hardware and highlighting the Ports section. Used the Windows CD to uninstall the winmodem by using Wmregdel. So I'm not really sure what one worked, but it works.......Whew !

Thanks for all the help,

A Happy Jenn...
