I have an ASUS CUSL2-C motherboard running Windows ME.
Everytime I install and application that requires the PC to be
restarted or from the Windows shutdown menu I select "reststart"
the PC always hangs(does not do POST). I always end up pressing
my reset switch.

TIA

Try disabling "Auto insert notification" in Device Manager. There is a downside to this though -- you have to manually start setup/install programs.

hi

this isn't the correct answer for your problem, but it's what I do.

When prompted that I need to re-start, I click NO, to that box, and then close everything out and re-start myself, from the start button, cause I generally have way too many things going at one time to trust that application to be able to properly re-start my pc.

JIC you want another opinion, I agree with sea69, I used to have the problems of hanging after clicking restart, but since I've started choosing "No" to a restart, I do it manually and have not had any problems since. I'm not sure if it's correct, but, it works for me. HTH.

Check out this page from

Windows 98 Annoyances.

Getting win98 tostop hanging and shut down

BTW. The book is good. The sample disk included with the book is of little use

hehe yes, went there and that page basically confirms what I said.. too much to close down (drivers and all) at one time can make windows 'hang'

still think I would rather do what I'm doing now http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

or 'End it All'

I am also doing the same as you about half the time.
But mostly so that I can Tell Install Control that I'm about to reboot and have it finish recording the changes made by the installed program http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

The link about is also for those who don't want to put up a hangup an possible cure it.
Even during a system shut down Not just during a restart.

I agree with the above, I usually shut down that way too, since I've noticed sometimes my system will hang if too many things are running, while if I close everything first, it usually shuts down properly. It's always best to close all applications possible anyway. Windows tries to save any unsaved info somewhere otherwise.

Bud Aallen (http://www.webteam.cc/~budallen/95wizard.html) also has a very good page related to Start Up/Shut Down problems. Check Bud's main page, he has a very good site. Bud Allen's Troubleshooter (http://www.wintrouble.net/)
Q238096 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q238/0/96.ASP) has good info too.

Rick: I wasn't degrading your help link, ( although I didn't- see where it offered a "cure" for it.. just a few suggestions to get out of it. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

and this: But mostly so that I can Tell Install Control that I'm about to reboot and have it finish recording the changes made by the installed program - went completely - over my head ..lol

It was the wrong time of day to be doing a reply to your message.
i'm also sorry about the wording.

The Install control is a program I use when I don't exactly trust a new program or an old one known to make unwanted changes.
it records all the changes made by the install program.
Makes hacking the stuff out later. A lot easier.

I finally figured out why my PC could not do a soft boot. I recently
re-installed WinME and installed my PCI cards one at a time and rebooted
after each PCI card was installed. When it was the sound card's turn,
latest driver for the Sound Blaster PCI 128, WinME detected a legacy
device and I got the ! in the harware manager. When I rebooted, the
PC hung and could not POST. Needless to say I upgraded the sound card
to the Sound Blaster Live and now the PC does not hang on soft boots.
