I thought it would be fun to see where folks like to "get away from it all". Be it a yearly vacation/holiday, or maybe just a weekend hideaway.

Also, if you had the choice of visiting 1 single place in the world, where would that be? I would love to be able to see so many places in the world but reality (a.k.a. $$) right now says "you can't". Hopefully one day that will change...

For the past several years we've been vacationing in an incredibly beautiful area of Maine's western mountains known as Rangely Lakes. Mostly for the outdoors type of person we hike, canoe, and relax. To us it is a special place indeed.

My ultimate destination is Alaska. Maybe someday.... :)

I used to live at the lake, the hotsprings are about a half hour drive away from the lake.

Having been MANY places on this globe, there are certainly three I'd like to visit, and stand out. ..... A trip to Ecuador with an extended visit to the Galapogos Islands, .... definitely Yellowknife as the best view of the Northern Lights can be seen better than anywhere else in the world, .... and finally Japan because knowing their toilet facilities have been made to customize and welcome the avid reader, I'd definitely like to see what else they have to offer ....

A close friend of mine, the veritable reflection of her mother, told me her mother ... and her boyfriend, ... both teachers, have travelled the world THREE times during the summer. How do they do this? Obviously the extended time-off allows for ..... but if you go into their **apartment**, you will find furniture loooong out-of-date, a televison WITHOUT remote control (not sure whether built-in converter), and if you go to their bank, ... their savings account is FULL OF MONEY as a result of living very simple in order to travel with absolute style, length, and not sure about luxury (I think they do it cheap), but DEFINITELY a lot ... and with great length.

Sooooooo, EXCEPT (of course) when it comes to our PERSONAL COMPUTERS, .... imagine what could come WITH ... when you do WITHOUT ....

Easy one. God's own; the land of the long white cloud; New Zealand.

But - the best Guinness in the world is here! :D So sad that the two countries are so far apart.

Yep- Nice Steve.
One year, my wife and kids hiked up Mt. Washington!.....I drove.
Figured they would be way to tired to walk back down! :D

Actually, they made pretty good time...Almost beat the Cog up there.

:) That's Mt. Adams in the background. 5774' above sea level. Not as bad a hike as it might look. Six or seven miles further on you get to Mt Washington, 6,288'.

Here's what it looks like in the winter...

My last vacation was to Manhattan [New York City] this summer. It was actually quite fun.

However I tend to stay in the western US with Utah being a prime destination. Great mountain biking and hiking.

Would love to go to Australia some day.

The image in Steve's last post approximates the view from my mom's house in Maine. I've been up Mt Washington (drove there the day after graduation) and to the Rangeley Lakes Region as well (raced sled dogs there every year as a youth).

After six years in the navy, I had seen lots of cool places. Favorites are Curacao, Toulon France, Monaco France, The Beach south of Agusta Bay Italy, Palma De Mallorca, and , believe it or not, Guantanamo Bay Cuba.

But there are two places I long to see. They are New Zealand, where Lord Of The Rings is Being Filmed, and Scotland.

hiredgoonz- This ampersand (&) cared more about the whole avatar issue than I did until I saw yours.:D

Great pics & posts, thanks all for sharing! :)

Steve & Jabar, I passed thru the White Mtns this past July (saw 2 pockets of snow from where you take the auto road up Mt Washington... Would love to see the Presidential Range in winter. Also want to hike there.

Had taken the cog up several years back. It is one really cool (pun intended) experience!

Yawningdog - did you ever try ski joring? The people we rent from in Oquossoc like it.... looks like alot of fun but difficult.

Kona on the big island of Hawaii

It has approx 360 days of sunshine per year.....

Just as long as I have broad band and a view of the ocean.

dilsburger- I would just kill to try skijoring, but alas, we get very little snow here in Virginia Beach. I might give it a go if I ever get back to Maine in the winter, but mom is picky about who drives her dogs, and I'm not exactly an experienced musher any more.

I have been an overseas teacher for over ten years now. Have been to and taught in many countries and visited even more in my time off.Born and raised in Canada.

South America- Bolivia, Argentina, Peru, Guyana, Venezuela
Europe- France, Germany, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Greece
Middle East- Israel, Dubai, UAE
Africa- Egypt,Kenya, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Madagascar
South Asia- Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam,Cambodia,Phillipines,Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Guam, Pulao
Oceania- Australia, New Zealand, Tazmania,
Misc.- Mauritius, Maldives
Spent 6 months in Iqaluit NWT(Nunavuut) Canada working for an air cargo company which took me to Greenland, Resolute and Nunavik ( the BEST Northern Lights are in these places!!)
Now live in Taiwan.
Would love to explore the Carribean and take a journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Of all these places, it's hard to choose a favourite. But I will NEVER forget a 4 month road trip I took around North America(Canada and the US). The landscape is so varied and all of it breathtaking, and the folks may change but their warmth and hospitality are consistent.

My life would be nothing without travel. (And a little vrtual travel is fun too)

Hey All...

Im' a former 'squid' (U.S. Navy) who spend 3 years of his 4 year obligation overseas. Mostly one the Pacific Rim. Been to Korea (a million times), Sasudi Arabia, Africa, Singapore, Japan (a million times), Oz (thrice), Thailand, Hong Kong (several times), the Philippines (a million times), etc, etc, etc...

Right now... Six months ago, I went to the Philippines and met my fiance. So... I've been there twice and I'm returning in a couple of weeks for two more weeks. Why did I go there in the first place? Uh... Money and comfort. I can live *VERY* well there for next to nothing. Once the plane ticket is purchased... All of the other expenses are negligable. Reason number two... Just about everyone there speaks English. Communications are EVERYTHING.

The one place in the world I'd *LIKE* to go?... China... For a MONTH. For the simple reason that the amount of documented history is mind boggling. It would take an entire month to be able to ingest just a smidgeon of what is offered. We'll see what happens after my Beloved gets here to the states.

Respectfully, Cory

I live in small tourist town so I get away from it all by going to the places where people live that leave to get away from it all by coming here.

Anyway, I've never been to the Giza Plateau and that's one place I've always wanted to go to. Maybe climb a pyramid or something. Japan's another place I'd like to hang out at for a while, seems like a cool place. I'd also like to see a lot of Canada someday, especially the east coast in the fall and up into Labrador. I've been north of the arctic circle and there's nothing much going on up there.

Camping is what we do. Has been and always will be the cheapest thing for a family to do. Both my kids have been campers from the time they were months old. Mountains, beach, backyard, all the same to them. Teachs a sense of the pioneer sprit that made our country so great.
The one place I would dearly love to go is Japan. Not the cities, but the coutryside. I have always been in love with the history of that country. So much older than ours will ever be.
LG;)
