After perusing the extremely informative thread about what makes a boat float, I have come to the realization that you are an above average lot. Mensa candidates for sure! Therefore the following question.

What is the meaning of the word "raam". I repeat so that a typo is not suspected. raam

My son, who is into music asked me this the other day, and I only could picture orange robed mystics chanting "raaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhmmmmmmm". The word is used in a song that he likes. I searched the net and was not able to find anything definitive.

I told him that trying to find the meaning of lyrics is a waste of time, as many are written while under the influence. But nonetheless, I wasted a couple of hours in searching. I only found vague references to eastern deities. OK, that works for me, but deity is a noun, and the lyrics are "baby will raam" (a verb).

So, any of you ex Hare Krishna types, or those up on Brahman beliefs help me out here?

I'll be sitting in the lotus position, awaiting your reply.

 I have no clue, but I wonder if your son was reading this word or hearing it only. Lyrics are extremely difficult to hear well in a whole lot of music and more so in most of today's music. If he hasn't seen it written down, I wouldn't bother trying to find it until you see it written. If it is from a popular group, the lyrics might be available on the web.

If it is street language, you are probably just to old to be able to be told what it means and it will be obsolete by the time you can find out.:D :D

For a possible set of three acronyms:

Acronym Definition @Amazon.com
RAAM Race Across America
RAAM Register of Australian Archives and Manuscripts
RAAM Remote Anti-Armor Mine

What are the rest of the lyrics?

HeHe- With some of the "lyrics" I hear shaking my sons walls these days, I'm sure it could mean just about anything ! Often, they just make up a word as long as it rhymes.

It would be helpful if we had the name of the band and the song...There are a lot of lyric searches on the web, and even if the word still made no sense, we may be able to tell at least what it was intended to mean! :D

My last suggestion would be that we all get in the lotus position and start chanting the word in unison.....He may be into something special we just don't understand! :p :D

I'm sure that the term can be found in the same lexicon that explains the title of the 60's hit "Ina Godda De Vida." Not sure about that spelling but I don't think it matters.
;)

Education levels of today's rock stars being what it is, it could be anything. "Roam" maybe?

I Must Not qualify for Mensa today
I have no idea. Other than to tell you it is Not in Webster’s Dictionary
Maybe Funk & Wagnal's encyclopedia has it.
I don’t have a copy to check

I would definitely SUSPECT a type of SLANG.

"Baby will Raam" .... sounds like "baby" is referring to "the other" person in a relationship who may have done SOMETHING ??? and, as a result, ... "raam", .... WILL "go down". (suffer/hurt/pay-the-price)

It is most likely VERY SIMPLE, ... as most of the lyrics today do not require much more than your day to day life moments and meanings. However, .... I agree that a look at the ENTIRE song would certainly help.

Another thought: Baby ... --W E W I L L-- ... **raam** is self explanitory ... I would think.

Carola. :D :D :D

The lyrics must have deep meaning to someone, somewhere. I still suspect heavy drug use by the author.

"Baby Will Raam" by Rusted Root

I left my home on the way to
Chicago,
Somewhere out in the middle of
the road,
Where all my dreams are falling
like snow and at night
I can still see it glowing....
blowing.

Cool breeze baby raam, raam,
baby raam, raam.

Baby raam tonight as your belly
will be full
With all the season's allowed...
And the baby will raam and the
baby will rise above,
Baby will raam,
You can cool me down like a big
fat bird,
Well hold me down like a tumblin
a bird,
Well, OM with your baby so right,
Baby will rise above all the seasons
allowed.

And the baby will raam and the baby
will rise above,
Baby will raam.

Just the bliss of my blood,
Just the bliss of my blood.

We belong in the bliss of my blood,
All my days when my days were good.
Hold me down in the daze of the sun,
Well come along my darlin in the
daze of the sun.

Well cool breeze baby raam, raam, raam,
baby raam, raam.

Baby raam tonight as your belly will
be full
With all the season's allowed.

Hmmmm- Sounds like Carola might be on the right track...

Anyway, they have a very interesting Web Site (http://www.islandrecords.com/rustedroot/index.las) to say the least.
They even have a chat room and an "ask us" button....

I don't think I care enough to ask them! :D

(Edit) Oh, what the heck...I went and asked them-HeHe.
Just check the answers now and then and see how they respond to the question. :D
They seem to be only a couple of days behind...Providing they answer every question. And since I've never heard of them before, maybe they do! :D
More likely, they'll think I'm an idiot for not knowing what it means.

Jabarnutcase ...... I got ummm .... CURIOUS .... .... Went to the website; I see what you mean.

Some type of euphoria MUST have been going on whilst writing those lyrics. However, upon reading it ... it occurred to me that this song might be about a young??? man who is suffering the loss of an unborn loss or stillborn BABY. During his drive of escapism .... he can feel the SPIRIT of his child and COMFORT knowing the baby is SAFE exisiting in the realm of the UNKNOWN but PEACEFUL AFTERLIFE. Hence, ... such IS the ---RAAM--.

YIKES!!! Did I just write that .... ?!?!?! :D :D

Carola. :D :D :D

Carola....Have you ever considered becoming a songwriter??? :D

Quick INPUT from FRANK here: :)

Note the reference of the FAT BIRD and BELLY. Perhaps some hidden or underlying message about a (once) PREGNANT woman.

Hmmmm ... Carola.

Jabarnutcase .... Ha! Ha! :D

..... Maybe when I was about seventeen ... and thought music and socialism were the TWO MOST IMPORTANT things in the WORLD (?!)

Hey! I like to think I was more WORLDLY than that, ... but at times, when the STRESS gets UP THERE, ... the EUPHORIA and ummmm, ... you know, ... living in your OWN WORLD .. sounds VERY INVITING!

Carola. :D

Hmm, I suppose there must be since we are living worlds apart. ;)

Hey, Eutychus , I LIKE the drum solo in Ina Godda De Vida!:D I don't know how to spell it either..and never figured out the lyrics, but the drum solo is cool. I also know most of the words to American Pie, never figured the lyrics out, but doesn't matter.. is a catchy song.:) Plus, my husband loves Pink Floyd and I can't even "hear" most of those lyrics, which might be a good thing..lol. Remember that song of "you and I travel to the beat of a different drum"?? Well, think "art" gets to travel to its own beat...regardless.

Sadly, Pianorak , I think we "hear" the clash of different worlds regularly these days.

Hmmm, Not too difficult...

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, honey,
don't you know that I love you?
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, baby,
don't you know that I'll always be true?

Oh, won't you come with me
and take my hand?

Oh, won't you come with me
and walk this land?

Please take my hand!

BTW when I was young (last century  ) I listened to that tune so many times I think I wore through the vinyl and began to hear the opposite side of the album

I'm not sure but I think it means "Garden of Eden" or paradise. Or something SIMILAR (http://www.ironbutterfly.com/int.htm)

Thanks, Fruss ..I never would have known that without you! In the Garden of Eden??...lol..boy, he should had some problems spelling if that was his "phonetic" version.:D But often, as has been mentioned here before in the After Hours section, what you "hear" isn't necessarily what they're singing anyway. Childish example is me singing "one horse soap and sleigh" at Xmas time until I was well into my 20's and realized that didn't make any sense. We were very pleased when HBO did the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame years ago; and it was the first time, because of closed captioning, that I actually realized what some of my favorite song lyrics really are..as opposed to what I thought..lol.

LOL :D That's a riot KAY....I was well into my teens before I realized it wasn't "one horse soap and sleigh" too!!! :D
I think I always knew it didn't make sense, but thought at least it was a catchy tune none the less.

Oh...And don't you guys even get me going about the 60's...    ;) :D

Years ago there was a British TV commercial for a washing-up liquid which I thought began like this:

"Now hands that judicious . . ." only to find out later that it was
"Now hands that do dishes . . . "
:o

Ha! Ha! ... GUYS! ... those are HILARIOUS! :D

Hmmmm .... "Def Leppard - Rock of Ages" ... I remember a friend of mine (back in around 1982???) used to SING OUT at .... THE TOP OF HER LUNGS .... "Rock of ages ... rock of ages ... STILL BOWLING ... STILL BOWLING" .... Ha! Ha! What a HOOT! ... You know, ... I still, to THIS DAY, ... am not entirely sure ... ??? ... "STILL ROLLING ... STILL ROLLING"??? "ROCK 'N ROLLING ... ROCK 'N ROLLING" .. ???

I think for many of us, ... we had our OWN VERSION of the lyrics for various songs we enjoyed. :)

Then there's there FAMOUS quote from OZZY OZBOURNE who stated that FOR YEARS he thought JIMI HENDRIX sang: .... "'cuse me while I KISS THIS GUY" .... (excuse me while I KISS THE SKY) LOL :D

"Perchance to dream" - where anything goes I guess.

...I just read in a magazine that most of these songs were written directly from Michael's recollection of dreams.... (http://groups.google.com/groups?q=Rusted+Root+Baby+Raam&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&selm=97010.235730JLOCKE41%40MAINE.MAINE.EDU&rnum=1)

This lyrical conundrum goes way back, but I may have found my answer in a music archive. I can remember my parents singing this song as we were tooling along the two lane byways.

Mairsie dotes
'n dosey dotes
an' little raamsy divey,
A kiddely divey doo
wooden shoe.
