Difficulty w/net access after crash

I have an ME machine with cable internet. Yesterday, I had some kind of OS meltdown which required me to restore the OS with the restore cd's. All seems relatively ok (as ok as me gets) except I've had some difficulty getting all apps to connect to the internet now. Specifically, Norton's Live Update will not connect, saying "live update had an internal error while trying to get your updates..." and a program I had used to get music cd track info from CDDB can no longer connect. Although my browsers can now connect (meaning I am getting online), I also noticed that now I am not getting the MS Networking login prompt I used to get before the system would boot in the past. I'm wondering if there is some configuration of my ethernet card which went haywire during the crash. Since I did not set this up (the cable guy did) I'm not sure what needs to be set. Their web site is no use, and poking around the various control panel areas which seem appropriate (internet settings, networks) has proved useless. HELP!

If you can connect and browse using IE (or whatever other browser you are using) and use eMail then it could be that it is these applications that are not now installed properly after your restore. Was the restore a factory restore or some kind of quick restore; and what make of pc is it?

Also, is Client for Microsoft Networks installed at ControlPanel<>Network<>ConfigurationTab and on the same tab have you set the Primary Logon as Client for Microsoft Networks??

Paul-Thanks for the reply. The pc is a ~1yo gateway athlon 1100 running ME. The restore was with the cd's which came with the pc. I checked the network settings you mentioned, they are (and were) as you suggest. Right after the restore, I was getting weird script error messages, generally related to IE when trying different things (like configuring software, etc., & not only IE itself) Re-installing IE seems to have eliminated this, but still cannot live update my Norton. I'm thinking I may need to reformat & reload completely. This OS is a piece of S***!!! This is the 3rd time I have had to restore the OS since getting the PC, including one other re-format (which, unfortunately, I cannot recall HOW I did :( ) Any other ideas???

Still unsure about your restore disk (someone with a Gateway may know more specifics) but generally there are options like a full factory restore (including a format of the HDD) or a restore of "components" some of which may be "over" the previous one. There may also be options like restoring specific software (if any came bundled) and hardware drivers etc.

It would be best if we can find out the problem(s), in case it(they) recurs in the future, in which case you would be none the wiser.

Lets try them one at a time. Can you uninstall (not delete) Norton and then reinstall it? Also, do you know if the "internal error" is created by Norton or by something else; and can you describe the exact error message?

BTW I've never used cable so, wouldn't know if this could be contributing in any way.
