W32.Appix.Worm (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.appix.worm.html) was discovered in the past few days, targeting KaZaa and other similar file sharing programs. One more reason to avoid KaZaa....

Pete, i see you're always against using kazaa bacause of spyware...i use Kazaalite 1.7.2 (www.kazaalite.com) which is supposedly rid of such crap (and certainly Ad-aware doesn't find anything since i use it).
What do you think of that modified version? As for the worms, it doesn't bother me because it's a matter of updating NAV frequently which i do...i wouldn't stop using email just because of worms neither...

If I read through the Symantec page correctly this virus is not associated with .mp3 or .mpeg but rather with software cracks. While I don't worry about .mp3 or .mpeg any other file type downloaded such as
.zip.exe
.rar.exe
.ace.exe
.rar.exe
.exe
.pif
.cmd
.bat
.hta
SHOULD always be suspect.

Okay, here's one for the conspiracy buffs, bear with me now: On recent a perusal of the Kazaa service, I noted a plethora of Symantec products free for the taking; Utilizes, Personal Firewall, Systemworks, Antivirus, Cleansweep, pretty much the whole product line. Suppose (just SUPPOSE, now... ) that the good people at Symantec devised a worm that would have a particular affinity for cracked software. After all, WHO would know better how to DO such a thing. And being the clever folks they no doubt are, they could probably engineer said worm such that it could not be detected in cracks of their OWN products (in a pirated copy of Utilities scanned with their own anti-virus, perhaps). And suppose they got together with all the other virus protection companies to further their Machievellian little scheme. Not only would they be sticking-it-to those awful copyright infringers and intellectual property thieves, they'd have another threat to point to in order to further justify the *PURCHASE* of their software. My god, it works on SO MANY LEVELS!!!
