I have a dial-up connection for internet, and I have 2 PCs running on an ethernet LAN. LAN works fine using TCP/IP protocol, however, my internet connection hangs frequently, no bytes moving either direction, with the LAN drivers installed. After experimenting, I have discovered that the NIC requires TCP/IP in order to work. When I uninstall the NIC drivers, my internet connection works great, are there any configuration settings that I can change to make them work together? I would like to have my LAN working and my internet connection working, without hang times.

Which OSes are running on the two pcs and do you have Internet Connection Sharing (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q234815&) enabled?

W98SE, 2nd PC isn't connected to the internet in any way. I don't use Internet Connection Sharing. I only use it to play games in multiplayer mode. I tried using NetBEUI protocol for the NIC, and TCP/IP for my Internet connection, but network connection didn't work with NetBEUI. But like I said before, if I use TCP/IP for the NIC and the Internet, everything works - with the exception of my Internet connection hanging.

Here (http://www.netsimple.co.uk/users/mercenary/network/software_setup.htm) is some help in correctly setting up a staightforward LAN and you should be able to get a better overview of all the various settings from it. Let's assume for now that DUN is setup correctly and only has it's TCP/IP protocol set up with a default configuration.

Perhaps you could list all your Network Components; (including the protocol/adapter Bindings and DNS settings). This will be useful for you to have as a reference for the future; and as a basis for peeps to work on here. I'm only getting to grips with networking myself but there are many here who know a lot of this stuff backwards. It always seems more simple than it actually is IMHO.

That did it! I used the link information you posted, that did the trick.
Internet connection is working perfectly, as well as my LAN connection.

Thanks,
Cindy

Good news. Out of interest, was the MAIN problem the DNS settings or the incorrect protocols - or something totally different? :)

It was the IP address & the subnet mask. I had set my peer-to-peer LAN up without designating the IP address. Apparently, that was interfering with my Internet connection. I don't quite understand it, but I am glad it is fixed. Thank you, Cindy.
