It could be that the file is corrupt or incomplete. Have the sender resend it and AV scan it first.

I had the attachment resend but to no avail the problem is still there
Word runs correctly on your system normally doesn’t it?
If so you may be seeing a version conflict or a handshake problem between your e-mail program and word.
Try saving the attachment to another folder from your e-mail program
then open Word and open the file from there
The CNV page fault makes me think it is a Convert error
This is why I send files in TXT format not WPD or DOC format

The module causing the fault is a Word converter. The fact that it is being used probably means that the Word version of the document is different from the version of Microsoft Word installed on your computer. And for some reason your Word is choking when it tries to convert the document.
I'd suggest asking the document author what version of Word he/she is using. Compare it to yours.
You could also ask the author to go to Tools > Options > Save on his/her computer and set the option for document version to match your version. Then save a fresh copy of the document.
If the document doesn't contain tables or elaborate typesetting, he/she could save it as an RTF document and send to you. You will have no trouble with that format.
