Hi, when my pc (win98se) boots, it stops half way through. It gets past post ok, starts loading win from the hard drive, but then just stops with a blnk screen and flashing curser. Then, when I press the resett button, it starts up in safe mode. From there I restart, and it opens up in normal mode, but only with 16 colours. If I change setting to 256 colours and restart it's ok. I recently put in a new graphics card (Geforce4) and installed the drivers etc.ok, but I had to disable the old onboard card in bios first. I've also noticed in bios that 'plug and play o.s.' is set to 'no', and onboard CIR i\o = disable. Any ideas?

Hey busDriver

You disabled onboard video in BIOS, but did you uninstall the old drivers for the onboard video?
What have you got going there? What motherboard, how much RAM, any PCI cards? Did you check Device Manager? Questions, questions....;)

Did not remove old drivers. How do I do that? MoBo is Asus culsl2, 510mb RAM, P3 933mhz, win98se.

You can check to see if they are listed in Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs. If so hilight them and click remove. I would suggest removing your new drivers as well and reinstalling them.

If not listed in Add/Remove Programs, try this:

right click on desktop
hit "properties"
then "settings">"advanced">"adapter"
hit "change"
in new window hit specify location
in next window hit "display list of all drivers
click "show all hardware"
scroll to top in left window and click on "standard display types"
scroll to top in right window and click "standard display adapter"
hit next, reboot, install new drivers.

Check in device manager before this and see if your old onboard display is listed there, if so remove

Luck

Thanks malc. Do you know what the old drivers would be called? I don't want to remove the wrong thing.

I doubt you will remove the wrong thing. If you have your motherboard manual check in that for what the onboard video is called. If not, just look for any thing that says display drivers or VGA drivers.

If you are really not sure, then try the second option I posted above.

Good luck;)

I have gone through the sequence from settings, but when I click next at the end, it says it's going to install new drivers, not remove them.

Any help there ........?

I think Malcore is suggesting that you go ahead with the install new drivers when it gets to that point, if I am reading correctly.

I would certainly want to go to the Device Manager and Remove the old drivers if they are still there.

Good luck,
Budfred

If you installed new drivers without uninstalling the old drivers, the old drivers will become "ghost drivers" and may or may not show up in Device Manager.

In Device Manager, click the + sign beside the Display category. If you see anything other than the Geforce4 card, highlight and choose Remove.

With the ghost drivers, you may have to boot in Safe Mode to see them.

Here's a better way. Boot in Safe Mode. Go to Device Manager and expand the Display category. Highlight and Remove everything listed, including the new GF4 card. Then reboot in Normal mode and assuming that onboard video is still disabled in BIOS, Windows should find the new GF4 and install the drivers that are already in the system.

Hi, I'm still having probs. I've noticed that,in bios, primary vga is set to PCI card, but my card is AGP. Could this be the problem? Thanks x

Set your BIOS to primary VGA AGP. This should help.

Post back if still having problems.

Thanks malcore, I've changed to AGP but it's the same. Any more ideas? By the way, in bios, onboard CIR I/O = disable. I don't know what it means, it's just a stab in the dark.

busdriver, did you try what BigBlue suggested above? Remove everything from display adapters in device manager and reboot? If so, you might have to remove everything, drivers from Add/Remove programs, adapter from Device manager and power off then remove and reseat your card and install the drivers fresh.
If you do this, try this (http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml) program and remove any entries for your old graphics card. It is a registry cleaner which is safe and easy to use.

As a side note, have you run a virus scan lately? Might be a good idea.
