Need to make sure in BIOS (Standard
CMOS Setup) that 1.44Mb, 3.5 in. is
select for Drive A.
Unless, of course, that's not what you
are using.
There are something like 5 different
seletions available.

And started chucking a bunch of floppies into the trash until I noticed that I was trying to format 750 kilobyte floppies when the floppy drive was set to 1.44 megs. I had bought them by mistake.

When you say you "tried the floppy in another computer" do you mean you tried the diskette or the drive?
On a couple occasions I've had a machine refuse to work correctly with the floppy drive even thought it's recognized. As I recall, setting the BIOS to "no floppy", doing a cold restart (power off), letting it boot completely, then restarting again, back into the BIOS, set the floppy correctly, and another cold reboot fixed it :) Technically, this is the "kick in the pants" approach :) You're forcing it to update the ESCD (and you will probably see a message to that effect on bootup after changing floppy parameters). Maybe worth a try; can't hurt.
