It just seems strange that the file was downloaded/downloading to the Temporary Internet Files Folder (where mbsasetup.msi has been renamed mbsasetup[1].msi).
I started the download (from this page (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/tools/Tools/mbsahome.asp)), chose Save to Disk, and was given the option of where to save it to. Started the download to my desktop in normal fashion - and then cancelled it, since I didn't really want or need it.
btw it wouldn't download in Opera; had to use IE5.5

Hello Yoda
Could the pathway have had too many characters in it.
I can't remember [does anyone else] what the maximum is that Windows can cope with but this address looks like it may have been very long.

sleddog When I first tried it in Opera it just filled the page with code! I wrongly thought it was M$ not liking a non-M$ Browser. I could "save target as" OK; and then I realised that msi wasn't included in its file types. Added msi; and it now does download OK.
sylvander INFO: Maximum URL Length Is 2,083 Characters in Internet Explorer (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q208427&)
yoda The TempIntFiles folder does some odd things with file names; adding [1]'s and [2]'s and renaming jpg to jpeg and so on. But then it is a Virtual System Folder - only M$ might know the answer. If the file is still in the TIF folder (and is not corrupt) then you might be able to copy it to a "normal" folder, rename it and try opening it.

The difference is, is that Opera attempts to determine action by identifiable MIME types, while Internet Explorer determines action by file associations stored in the registry. And .msi is a (registered) MS installation thingy which web browsers that aren't integrated into the operating system don't recognize.

Yes Paul I think you nailed it i've been messing with the file system all day and that is what has happened. I can guarentee it was SP1 when i down loaded it and the system ran like crap so i uninstalled it and went back to the hot fixes. and yes SP1 changed a lot of things or should i say Screwed up.But i can straighten her out:D

sleddog LOL :D I was a bit sleepy when the jumbled text appeared in the browser but shortly realised what the problem was. I actually had "Determine action by file extension if MIME type is unreliable" checked in Opera but of course Opera only uses the list it has compiled and doesn't check for the Windows File Extensions, even when something "obviously" isn't an IANA defined MIME-type.
On a separate note, it is a bit surprising about the .msi files (MS installer packages) that so few of them are used in comparison to the more common setup.exe files. On my pc there are only half a dozen and only two of them (OnTrack Internet CleanUp and Norton Internet Security) - are not Microsoft applications; so there doesn't seem to have been a great take-up of them by software developers.
