lost color on display

While trying get my defrag to run, I removed all the programs
except for explorer and systray, then did a selective startup
and ran scandisk and defrag. The defrag quit at 50% and I tried
to do another restart. Then when it restarted it went to 16 colors
on the display and won't let me change them no matter how many times
I try restarting. I am running a Gateway 300mhz with 192mb ram and
using win98 2e and have been having problems with the defrag hanging
when it reaches about 50%

do you have a screen saver running??

if so turn it off.

look in "System Troubleshooting"- section for a bunch more things to try.
