since Linux re-formatted the whole of my 40 gig hdd. I have done an fdisk, format & re-install of w98se.
graphics are horrible & the system is slow. I have gone through another fdisk, format & install, but it's much the same.
I wasn't sure at which point to load the m/b drivers etc. but it would only do it after install of w98.
I have put in w98 then partition magic & set my partitions, norton system works & freeserve internet.
help...........

If you say the graphics are horrible, did you check if win98 has the correct driver loaded for your video card (or at all)? Also check your display properties/settings and check the amount of colours and screen area that is set up and play around with it.

this is a long shot but they may be traces of Linux still on the HD and windows dont like it, i know windows wont see then but anything goes on a PC, i dont know if those traces would do what you have posted but it mite be worth doing a Zerofill of the HD, i said it was long.
being as you have installed twice and still no change it mite be worth a go.

There is still traces of other stuff on the hdd. as there is a sound file which was hacked in to the early version of w98 (which was upgraded to w98se) also the reg no. came up by itself. I thought that fdisk & format should have cleared them!
there are no conflicts anywhere, and I have installed w2000nt pro on another partition & the graphics work fine.
I can't alter the settings in display (to change the colours etc) as they're frozen, but I can in w2000.
I can only think to go for another install, but is there any good step by step guide anywhere?

Hi Vic,
Check what drivers are loaded in Win98. In display properties, click settings> advanced>adapter>change>specify location>display a list of all drivers>show all hardware, then hilight your graphics card manufacturer in the left window and hilight your card model in the right window and click next.
Before you hilight anything in the last windows, you can see what is hilighted. I suspect it will say standard VGA driver.
Luck.

I've read that Linux can some times messes with things with a new install. I zero out the drive when I go to a different OS or Installing a multi boot. I figure that I'm going to cause myself enough problems forget something sneaking up behind me to bite me in the ass. So to be safe I zero everything out.

Seems like the graphics card has not been recognised as it is no longer shown in system properties (whereas it used to be) , and I don't seem to have a driver for it, it is a Chuang Chuang (or something like that)
I know that they have a support web site as I contacted them some while ago, but I can't find it now. nor can I get at my old e-mails at the moment as the machine wont import them, and much of my paperwork is stored away, as the house is undergoing major repairs.
Picked the right time to crash eh ?
so if any one has any idea on what the card is I would be most grateful, I have done several searches already, without success.
also the monitor an AXION is reported as a plug and play, (but I think it always was) so if there are any drivers for that, I could try updating them as well.

Vic, you said that things were working in W2K. Maybe you could get the driver manufacturer from the Device Manger there and see if Chuang or whatever is mentioned there to give you a lead on the website to find.
Any chance that you could get to your eMail files and "Open With" Wordpad and then search for a string you would recognise if you are not able to actually import them?

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the ideas, I'll have a go at that. the manf is actually yuan (I think) I thought I was pretty close to finding them last night, but tiredness got me and I had to quit whilst I was ahead.
I'm up to my neck at the moment so can't give it as much time as I would like, but at least I'm able to use it to some degree and have a connection.
I will let you know how I go on.

Vic,
Maybe you have been here already, but take a look (http://www.yuan.com/products/prod-1.html) around if you haven't.
Try pulling your card and searching for what chipset the card is: ie. Nvidia or SiS etc.
Luck
Edit_ this is a strange site. They only offer one set of drivers for their nvidia boards and they are only for Win2K/XP(this may be why things are ok on Win2K and not 98). You will have to figure what the chipset is and get your drivers from nvidia or SiS.
I suspect it is probably a TNT card.
Doubl Edit_ Stranger still
here (http://www.yuan.com.tw/corp_top.html) is another site (Taiwanese) for a Yuan graphics company that makes ATI boards.
Again, search the board itself for a label or some kind of reference as to the actual chip.:p

thanks.
looks like it might be AGP-100L. sis 6326
but says it supports w95/98 driver with auto installation ???
SiSoftSandra used to show it as a yuan yuan card but doesn't show it anymore. w2000 uses standard vga driver.
Think I'll have to dig into the cupboard and find the old Sandra report, and, as you say, pull the card and have a look.

well I thought I'd got the right driver last night (as reported by Sandra) yes its showing again in there. but no go.
so today I re-formatted and setup again using w98 first ed. still the same only now I cant get sound at the moment either.
all I can think to do now is to get another graphics card (with drivers)
and see how that goes, but I still feel that there may be an underlying problem.
