Hi Folks
As you'll can tell from the comp. speak, I am a complete novice, I recently purchased a (1700-2000)athlon XP and we have tried to install 98 and ME seems to have accepted ME then displays protection error, flashes ME on screen then offers safe mode but when enter is pressed PC goes back to scan. Does this PC need an XP O/S installed
Help gratefully accepted: WHEECH

Hi guys...I'm a little confused here.
Jiggy, unless I'm mistaken-(and I often am :D ), I think wheech has already purchased a computer with an Athlon XP chip and his problem is installing the OS, not the CPU.
Correct?
If thats the case wheech, what did you do- install win98 and then install win ME over it?
As jiggy mentioned, try to fill us in a little more. ;)
And if your question is Do you need WinXP for your AthlonXP processor to work, the answer is NO.

I am not sure if this is what you are asking, but...
When you install WinME, it may be necessary to shut down and cold boot several times during the install, it is one of the more fun:rolleyes:
attributes of the program. If you do this enough, WinME usually does finally get itself installed.

Hi again Wheech-
When you say "no success" with 98, what happened?
If you already had problems installing 98, trying to install ME over it will do nothing but add to your problems.
I take it this is a new pc ("barebones?")-with no OS installed as it came? Did it come with a hard drive, or did you install one?
If you installed a brand new hard drive, it would need to be properly formatted before actually installing the operating system.
In any case, I think your best bet (since you're just starting), it to format and start over again with the OS you actually want.
Again, just a bit more info will help to sort this out.
;)
