My computer shows the CD-rom in My Computer but is not able to access it. When this happened last year
I purchased a new CD-rom but the same thing is now happening with the new one. When I put the old & new
CD-roms in another machine they worked fine. I have checked all of the connections to make sure they are seated,
what else should I do or should I take it in for service.

Welcome, whitedress! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Did this new drive ever work right in your system? Do you get any error messages? Cables may be well-seated, but does the colored stripe correspond with Pin 1, at both ends of the ribbon cable? Have you recently installed any other new hardware or software? In Device Manager, are there any yellow "!" or red "X" showing? Reply back and we'll go from there. Include your Windows version, the model of your PC (Compaq, HP, etc), and any other info that's pertinent. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

The basic layout of my system is

AMD 400mhz
64m of memory
10G hard drive
48X CD rom.

It was put together over 2 years ago by a friend that is no longer available for help. It originally had a 40X CD rom
that worked for over a year when it started to disappear from the system for no reason then show up again.
When it reappeared it would sometime work and other times the message the drive is not accessible, the device
is not ready would be given. It was at this point I replaced it with the 48X CD rom which worked fine until about
a month ago. Now the same problem is happening again. No other new hardware has been added other than the
48X. Everything else works fine. I really would like to try and fix this myself rather than take it in for service because
I plan to try to upgrade the system myself so suggestions would be appreciated.
