This is different. When trying to write to the floppy drive on this Gateway G6-400, I get an error message stating the floppy disk is write protected. No matter which floppy I use (and I have used a bunch) I still get this message. I have removed the floppy drive and replaced it with two others I know to be working and still get the message. I have tried replacing the cable also with no luck. Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so, what was the end result? Thanks.

Welcome to PCWorld!

I haven't had that problem, but it sounds like it is either a software problem or CMOS, not hardware.

Hello photogr4,

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

Are you running any AntiVirus? Have you run a scan recently?

Complete specs....also what is running in the background.

Go here (http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html) and grab StartupList...post the results.

Are you trying to copy the file using Explorere or are you trying to save the file using some program, like Office?

I've had the same problem as yours before on my SONY fdd. I also tried with a few other diskets and it didnt work as well. Either Write-protected or please insert a disket...

But I managed to format my diskets by going into MSDOS and do everything in command prompt. Well, though it wont work in Windows Explorer, it worked in MSDOS! Under your MSDOS... type....
C:\>format a: /x

Sometimes the answer to a problem is so obvious you fail to see it at all. When Budford mentioned the CMOS settings, a light went off, and since this system was a trade-in I checked the BIOS, and you guessed it, write protect floppy was enabled in Diskette Configuration. I disabled it and.....IT WORKS!! A big thanks to all who replied. I've found a new home, so to speak.
