I've got over 20 mg of stuff in Temporary Internet file still there after deleting everything that I can see. What is this stuff, a bunch of "hidden' files? cookies? My mom use to hide cookies...same thing?
Anyhow, how do I get rid of the stuff I can't see? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Generally with a third party cache cleaner/cookie manager. Type cache cleaner or cookie manager into Google (http://http:://ww.google.com) and you'll come up with about a million hits (alright, maybe only 100,000). That being said, some of what is there are cookies for sites that require sign ins, (saves your settings) and the most recent pages you've visited. You can also clean up the history folder, and other things like that with some of the cleaners. You can also manually delete things from DOS but it is more dificult to find everything unless you look for it in Windows and write it down.....

You can limit the amount of space devoted to saving Temp Internet Files, however 20mbs is not a large file for this type.

Mine is set to a 64Mb size limit. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

you do this in IE browser by: clicking 'Tools', 'Internet Options', General TAB,..Temporary Internet- 'Settings' and choose the size you want. But remember, these are 'cached' temporary files as mjc was saying above.

a good way to get rid of a lot of junk is to use the windows find.
open the program
browse for the temporary innternet files folder
in the named bar type *.*
hit find now
it will bring up everything in your folder just select it all and delete it. just be usre not to delete an ini files. everything else can go

there shouldn't be any ini. files in Temporary Internet folder.??

and if he sets his amount to "x" anything over that will be cleared to allow more (recent) to be added.

the ini files in the folder are desktop.ini files. windows puts them in there if you use windows login. it is used to deferenciate between users.

lol.. apparently.

but back to the TOPIC... again if he were to set his maximum size limit for Temp Int Folder.. it (most of the time) will not go far over that.. sometimes it does need to be manually 'cleaned'/ deleted.

You could always use a prog to clean out those files, try Window Washer, get it from http://www.webroot.com/down1.htm#WindowWasher it only last for 30 days but it sure is good.

Gosh, I remember when I use to get really psyched when I found something as big as one whole mg to delete when trying to clean up my hard drive. I'd wander around in Windows Explorer and try to delete stuff that didn't look important to me and then the whole screen would go blank or some sort of warning would appear that if I continued I'd be starting WWIII.
Anyhow, I followed the first post advice and went to Google found a freeware application called CleanUp. Installed and executed and boy,did that thing start cleaning out my locker. Took my cookies, emptied my cache of chips and salsa finished my sandwich, and threatened to come back later for my milk money. It deleted over 100mg of junk. I haven't missed a one. yeah! I don't know if it deleted any ini files. Wouldn't argue with either of you cause I don't like to lose at anything, even stuff I know I'm ignorant of. Thanks all, for your posts and attention.

I have been wanting to try running the Browser Cache in Memory and avoid the hard drive clutter in the first place, plus speed up browsing. AXCEL216 (http://members.aol.com/axcel216/) has the instructions under "Max Speed". It requires Registry modification and the "tweak" should probably be undertaken only by advanced Windows tweakers. I have Ghost backups ready in case I do something dangerous.

Change my last to say may require Registry modification.

Oh well, the experiment was pretty much a waste of time. I created a 10M ramdrive and did not need to use EMM386 (wouldn't load anyway). IE would not accept the cache drive change and the system didn't like the Registry mod. Some of the keys don't match, which must be part of the problem.

I did get Netscape to accept the ramdrive directory, but did not notice any performance change.

Just ran Scanreg /restore to get back to normal.
