Hey all. If I buy a new sound card and I already have onboard sound, how do I install it? Do I need to disable the onboard sound through the BIOS? Or can I just do it from the Device Manager. Im running Windows 2000 by the way. I don't remember seeing an option to diasble the onboard sound in the BIOS. Any help?

If the board has onboard sound, then it's very likely that there is an option in BIOS to disable. Sometimes you have to scroll to the bottom of the screen to find it. So here's the steps to take:
1) Boot computer. Enter setup. Find the onboard sound option. Disable it. Save and exit.
2) Continue booting into the OS. Go to Device Manager and delete any onboard sound listings there. Also a good idea to check in Add/Remove Software for drivers related to the onboard sound.
3) Power down. Install new soundcard.
4) Boot up. Win2000 will probably load its own generic drivers.
5) If you want to change the driver to the one provided with the soundcard, or if you have downloaded the latest driver, then go to Device Manager and find the listing for the new soundcard. Choose Properties and then choose the Driver tab. Choose to Update Driver. Follow the instructions. Reboot.
Cheers.
