View Full Version : Problems Connecting Win2K with Win98se
Hi All,
I have just successfully installed Win2K.
My Win2K machine along with my Win98SE machine is connected into a switch, in which the switch is connected to a router.
Both machines can access the internet.
However the machines can't see themselves.
I have all the right network cards and cabling set up etc.
Both computers have the same workgroup name of PROGRAMMER.
Both have TCP/IP and NetBEUI set up on them.
I have enabled shared C: drives on both machines.
However no luck when it comes to seeing anything.
Could anyone offer any assistance to me please?!
This is painful :-(
Regards
Beno

Hi Deddard,
I looked at your post before I posted my one and none of it really helped although it is a similiar problem to mine.
How did you end up getting yours to work in the end anyway??

All the steps I took are actually in the post. It isn't perfect yet, but it may be that the solution concerning the win2k and 98 which was posted as a reply in that subject may help - I've yet to try going into the register and deleting the necessary file.
I think it's just a case of win 2k (which is NT based) being such a different OS from 98. I've not used 2k, so I'm not sure if it is similar to the XP system.
Try running the network setup on the W2k machine again, and changing the workgroup name to something simple like HOME (it may well default to this anyway) If there is an option to create a network disc, do so, and follow whatever instructions you receive.
Ensure that both computers can detect the IP addresses automatically.
One thing I found was that WIN XP uses just uppercase letters for the workgroup name, whereas 98 can use lowercase. It shouldn't make much difference (I think) but try to ensure that the 98 machine follows the exact name that the Win2k one does for it's workgroup.
Also, make sure that the protocols are bound correctly. TCP/IP should be bound to client for microsoft network, etc - it should be done automatically, but hell, this is microsoft!
Another thing to do is simply check the connection configuration. I seem to recall from some literature that came with my internet connection that this can cause problems- if you are using a cable modem, it isn't really a modem, but a LAN connector (go figure!) and if it is in the same domain or workgroup, it may cause the system to sulk.
A simple crossover connection between the two PCs may solve problems, but that's just a stab in the dark.
you could try creating a shortcut on your desktop to the remote computers HDD, this works well for me - even though the computers don't like looking at each other through the Network neighbourhood, I can connect with no problms via a shortcut on the desktop.
Just create a new shortcut, and type in the correct path to your other computer's HDD ( something like //Remotemachine/C:) give it a click and see if it works.
