Hi All,

I currently have a 15" CRT monitor which is well......not bad, although I do want to upgrade it.

I will be buying MS Flight Sim 2002 soon and was wondering on people's opinion as to whether I should go for a LCD screen or a CRT screen. The LCD although are more expensive are nicer on the eyes, but I have heard that if you want to play games, the CRT screens are the way to go - why is that anyway??

Let me know your thoughts on this one.

Regards

Beno ;-)

I have a 17" and 15" LCD and love 'em. They are easier on the eyes and they have lots of screen real estate compared to CRTs. They take less power and they are a lot easier to move.

I have heard that the problem with some fast moving games is that the LCD may not refresh quickly enough and you may get some ghosting. I believe this problem has been largely fixed though. I am not a gamer, so I can't tell you much about that.

I would suggest You TRY IT Before you buy it

I have 17 and 19 inch CRT’s
Flat screens

The few LCD screens I have seen were displayed with what the manufacturer
Had optimized for the display
In real world use they do fall behind in refresh

Have they fixed it?
I can’t say..
I quit looking at them after reading the price tags

If you are gaming, you are better of with a CRT. My experience is that games perform better at lower resolutions and the LCD screens like to run at really high resolutions.

If you are using it for any kind of business apps, and you can afford it, the LCD is the way to go....

If you do any digital photo stuff lcds stink. I bought an f70 from hp and our photos were terrible. I went back to a 17 inch flat screen.
Crts better for games also. Much easier to change resolutions, depending on your eyes.

I must agree that (at this time) a good quality CRT is the way to go. (Especially for gaming)

Besides the above mentioned problems associated with different resolutions, the thing that bugs me about them is the way the clarity fades away as you move to the side. I'm sure you've seen this effect on a laptop screen or rear progection "big screen" tv.

Other than that, LCD's really do have a beautiful image when viewed straight on.
Finally, as Rick mentioned.....I might buy one when the prices aren't so outrageous.

hi everyone;I'm new here.

My first post!;)

I have an 18" LCD and FS2002. Positive points for LCD: Easy on the eyes;if you do a lot of internet browsing/reading then LCD is best. If you get 'particular'LCD screens then ghosting(lack of refresh)isn't a problem; and of course extra desk space. The screen also doesn't look too bad at angles if u buy a separate whereas laptops tend to probably because of cost cutting. LCDs also have lower resolutions than equivalent CRTs. I bought my LCD for 600odd pounds and it only has a maximum of 1280x1024 whereas an equivent priced CRT goes to 1600or1800 dimensions!! I enjoy FS2002 with my LCD;I have no problems with it(no ghosting) plus very good graphics; only problem though-I can't take the resolution higher :( If I got a top graphics card then I can't fully exploit the card as I have to use a lower resolution.

It's obviously up to u;I prefer the LCD over CRT. Even though I can't go to higher resolutions the LCD screen tends to be very detailed;I think it's to do with LCDs being more exact than pixels.

And like I said- FS2002 looks well cool.

Welcome Chessman to the PC Forums,

Yeah I have just been doing some research on the screens and you can get pretty good LCD screens these days. Most LCD screens have refresh rates between 30-65MHz but some go up to 85MHz so I think if I save for a while then I will be able to get kick ass visuals with FS2002!

I do a lot of programming and reading at my computer and after a while you really can notice the difference with CRT screens as opposed to LCD screens when it comes to eye strain.

Thanks for the welcome:D

I tend to read a lot with my computer so LCD helps a lot there for me.

I am currently addicted to FS2002. I'm now thinking of buying the Geforce4 tit.4600 Card. I have all the settings to top but the framerate is a little low.Looks so good with all the settings ramped up!

What I like a lot with FS2002 is you can download scenery and get real good detail on a favourite part of the World.

When I get the new graphics card I can't help but think 'What would the picture look like at higher resolutions?' but I think I'm being too much of a perfectionist as I'm thinking 'Wow!' at the visuals alreday ;and thats without the Geforce 4.

I'm a bigtime gamer and I love my CRTs... I have two NEC flat CRTs, one 22", the other 17". Recently been cranking out beautiful scenery on both with UT 2003. Love NEC in general, but they are bit pricey. The screens tend to be a little darkened too, which cuts down on the eye strain. Some "special" chemical compoud... If you want specs, check the NEC website. Huge resolutions and high refresh rates. If you go with a CRT make sure it's a FLAT CRT. Those other fishbowls they call monitors will give you headaches in no time!

Hey Chessman,

You are really making me jealous with all that FS2002 talk, I am getting anxious to get it now!!.
I am a Commercial Helicopter pilot and a private fixed winged pilot although I don't get to fly much at all really these days because of Uni committments and committments to my computers!!

But I still have flying as a passion and whilst I can't do it for real just in this point in time, I do believe that FS 2002 will give me my fix in no time!

Its a hard call with the monitor choice because so many people have given me varied anwsers, so I think I will just go with a high refresh rate LCD at say 1024X768 (I think that will be fine) you don't want the res too high else everything becomes way small!

Regards

Ben

P.S -> Where in the world is your town in??

P.P.S -> NiroTToriN thanks for your comments

Yep;FS202 is cool. Loads of helicopters to choose from over the net :)

http://www.simviation.com/fs2002heli1.htm

Just some of them :D

If you are going for an LCD I wouldn't go for less than a 17" and also 1280x1024 .In my opinion the extra resolution makes a lot of difference with deskspace and extra gaming clarity.

Yeah;thanks to NiroTToriN for your comments too.

What is your email address? I love flying the helicopters on FS2002!!

Shoeburyness is in England;35 miles East of London.
