I'm having a difficult time getting Norton Antivirus 2001 (an OEM version that cam bundled with my Soyo Mobo) to install and work properly on my PC (1.333GHz Athlon TB, Soyo S7KVApro, running Win98SE). The installation was problematic and kept "cutting out". I finally managed to get it in once I rebooted to Safe Mode.
However, the main Norton Antivirus application dies shortly after I try to run it (i.e. to do a disk scan for example).
The installation also managed to override my Outlook2000 settings such that it was looking for a POP3 server that was being handled by Norton, but did it only part way - breaking my mailer's link with my ISP.
Is anyone aware of ANY problem trying to Run Norton Antivirus 2001 under Win98SE?

Yes, it's not Win 98, it's the NAV.
Try getting into regular mode and keep running live update until the problem clears, it will eventually. Or you could just get 2002 version.
Emphasis On the Keep running Live update
Until it reports No More updates available ( If they even support anymore)
Or pickup Nav 2003 ( yup It’s out already)

I'm still running 2001 and they do support it still.

You might want to consider doing an online scan...similar problems can happen when you are infected already, as many malware apps try to defeat AV products by disabling them.
(check the AV link in my sig for a list of some online scans)

I believe I do have a virus "Kletz worm" on my PC - which appears to have been contracted through e-mail and kepts trying to propagate itself via Outlook. What does Kletz do? I've already noticed some wierd stuff in windows - like Notepad keeps disappearing! (I've restored it a few times to the Windows\System folder only to find it gone after a single use!!)
Could this be interfering with the Norton AV 2001 installation?! The way it keeps dying is similar to what Notepad is doing.
What should I do now? Help!
If you have access to a Known Clean system
Visit one of the Anti Virus sites
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html
Down load the removal tool for KLETZ
Use a clean write protected disk to boot your system
Then run the removal tool

What you have is the Klez worm.
I have had mixed results with the removal tools.
What I like to do is:
1) Remove the worm manually.
2) Run the removal tool.
3) replace the damaged windows files by running SFC or extracting them from the appropraite cab files
4) Re-install any corrupted programs.
For information on klez go here: (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@mm.html)
For the removal tool go here: (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.removal.tool.html)
I used Nortons AV 2001 with my Win98SE and had no real problems other than it seem to make my machine sluggish. Replaced with AVG.
