You can leave them both run.
But it’s a bit of a resource waste

I use both also.
Running NAV all the time and use AVG at least once a week to double check

Find where AVG is setup to start from ( Start menu Or registry Run ) and disable it
Then start it as needed or wanted

I guess you can, but whay would you?

It just uses up system resources...........

So pick one and use that, uninstall the other one.

Hello Hawk,
If I may, I would like to give a little input on this.
KEEP AVG, DUMP NORTON!!!
I have been gone for a while and one of the first things I see when I come back is someone at a profesional level still using anything Norton.
Norton is a scab. A pestulance on the computing world. My number one money maker. The last two virus removals I did involved a bug that first attacked Norton, then other parts of the system, but could not stop AVG from being D/L, installed and ran.
I have a great deal of respect for Rick's abilities, but no respect for Norton.

Have a nice day

bassman other than norton 2001 running amok, and putting around 100mgs or so into C:.And wipe does not wipe free space anymore, and it will not let me delete cookies in it because they are yellow. Then you come to disk doctor and it doesn't do all of the programs that it use too. It's skips the last 2.And if you want to put the check in the fix it box,you have to shut down and let it come on in start up.It does give you extra features thou, like go back which I didn't install. Is it xp or is it nortons?

Hello Kay, yes you know me well ;)

Rick :D Just had a conversation with someone about the pros/cons of WORD and WORDPERFECT. I guess it's been long enough now that we can say "It's what I grew up on" :D

Hawk, Norton (made by Symantic software) is a very well marketed collection of tools that, believe it or not, you already have. The software companies that make these utilities rely on your lack of ability to look further then a simple button function to perform a task. The fact that you are here asking questions tells me otherwise.
As Norton continues to fail in different areas, your computer will begin to fail as well. This happens because Norton is attached to everything in your registry. The other programs that Norton has attached itself to can no longer function properly because thay have lost part of their instruction set, (to check in with Norton to see if all is well).
Prepair yourself for a lot of machette work in the registry to slash out all Symantic and Norton listings.
Be carefull though, as some of the base functions of your computer may have been written by Symantic (mouse and keyboard to name a couple) and unless you have advanced drivers for these items, they will be rendered useless.
As for Is it xp or is it nortons?, if you are having problems, it is Norton!

One man's opinion, not to be taken too seriously (maybe):D

Wordperfect is still Cheaper :)

A person can be incredibly intelligent in one area, and really dumb in another, though. I think my husband has finally given up on installing System Works..lol (after having to wipe and start over on several attempts)..but is still convinced that WinDoctor (think that's the name) is truly awesome and reaches for that Norton CD whenever he has puter problems. I was having problems once long ago, and he was wanting to install the Utilities and I told him "no, but you can run whatever off the CD if you want"..and I have Registry entries that I have no idea how to get rid of, and am reluctant to fool with unless puter "breaks" again. I have "hidden" the CD whenever we're working on someone else's puter..:D..."Gee, Sweetie, I don't know where the Norton CD is"...nose getting longer and longer.:)

Kay

The people who have the most problems with systems works are those who install it after their system is set up with other software

The Last time I ran it.
It removed un-needed links in the registry ..

Surprise Surprise they were needed for half my software that was installed almost two earlier
just not used very often

Heck I don't need to hide it.
I just put it in an unmarked case.. :p

Hawk

There are VERY FEW problems that require a format / clean install

The first thing to learn about the registry is How To Make Backup of it..
And How to restore a Back up of the registry

Once you have that you can’t learn by doing and still be able to go back without ending up with a doa system
backup Backup Backup Allways Make a Backup Before you try anything in the registry

Oh BTW did mention you should make a backup :)

Know the feeling, Rick . Husband bought System Mechanic back when we were newbies and I let him run it on my puter because he thought it was so cool. It found a bunch of "unused files" and he said, "sure, go ahead and delete them"... Those "unused" files were the pictures stored in my scanner software....sigh. Very "lucky" husband..I still had all the pictures and could re-scan as necessary. :)

hawk : I am not that far "past" you in experience, but am still back in my newbie mind state when it comes to the Registry. Everything that mentions the Registry has dire warnings about "Don't touch it!..you can seriously screw up your puter touching the Registry!"..lol..and I am still in TOTAL fear of the Registry even though, logically, I know a bit better. But Rick is right..first thing you do when you get there is back it up..and I think that "good" Registry cleaning programs do that first too..back it up, just in case.
