View Full Version : I'm a UT 2003 addict...

Wow... That one word says it all about UT 2003. Killer weapons, funky skins, cool game types and amazing levels are what it's all about. I was completely blown away by how HUGE some of the levels are. Tokara Forest for instance is massive. The majority of the other levels also have a similar sense of scale. I'd just like to see even more levels!!
Bombing run is certainly better that the original UT's "Assault" game mode. Single player mode was short, and easy; I beat it in an evening. It's all about the multiplayer tho.
The command managment is much better now too, allowing you to actually MOVE while you give commands as opposed to standing there like an idiot practically BEGGING someone to shoot you! Speaking of movement, the dodges are a nice feature, but be careful making minor adjustments cause a double tap of the directional keys will send you FLYING in that direction. Incidentally, you can turn that option off, but it adds quite a bit to the game play. Ditto for the double jump. =)
I liked the "adrenaline" idea too. Can basically take your powerups when you want them rather than when you pick up an item. A major plus and a strategic part of the game. Do you use it for health? Or for a speed boost to score the next flag capture or point? What happens when the other team uses their adrenaline?
There's soo, much more, but I'm realizing that I'm basically writing a review of the game. Forget that, I could be spending this time PLAYING instead!
Just a word for all you out there; BUY THE GAME! I know it's $50 most places, but it's worth every cent. If you don't want to hand over the dough without any idea of the product, download the demo. It's worth the time even on a 56k. Then, when you love, post so I can say "I told ya so!!" ;)

Bought the game yesterday! Yeah, it's a "WOW!" game all right. Even though I have an aging GF2 Ti (stock speeds right now) it still looks very good, and that's at 800 x 600 in 16-bit color with all details at or just below Normal! Only had a couple hours to play so far, still going through all the modes and maps and mutators and weapons and frags, frags, frags. :D
Just a few questions, tho...
1) - Since my vid card is barely below the GF3 threshold, should I get a GF3 card (and overclock the sucker) or should I wait 'till NV30 comes out and the GF4's drop in price. I see you have a GF4 & GF3 in your systems, just wondering if the jump from GF3 to 4 makes a huge difference.
2) - I've been getting interested in making my own maps, but never tried it before. I know I could do it if I could figure out how to operate the UT2 Editor monstrosity. Anyone know of any online (or offline) basic tutors? I don't care if it only shows me how to make a big empty slab of terrain for a map, I just need a basic step-by-step guide on how to get started with using it.
Did I mention that UT 2003 is a great game? ;)

just wondering if the jump from GF3 to 4 makes a huge difference.
A friend(longtime gamer) who plays current games recently bought a GF4 Ti4200 to replace his "true" GF3, he wasn't impressed with the difference. He returned it for a Ti4600 and is very happy with the upgrade in performance.
Myself -I recently jumped from a GF2 MX400(probably no comparison to your card) to the Ti4200 and am thrilled.

I actually found a pretty big increase in performance. I have a true Geforce3 and Geforce4 Ti 4400. Not the Ti 4600, but it's still a big increase. The 4200 didn't look like it would be a good upgrade for the price, so I paid a little more and got the 4400. Happy I did.
To put things in perspective, I ran 3DMark2001se on both of my comps and got a 2000 point difference between the machines. The P4 machine was the lower mark since it had the Geforce3. Even tho the AMD chip (1800+) I'm running is supposed to be "equivalent" to the P4, I have my doubts. The AMD machine posted the higher score. To give it a fair test, I'll swap out cards on the machines and see what happens. Have had time recently. Barely enough time for my e-mail fix and some pcguide advice.
Also, if you DO find a site/resouce detailing the use of the UT level editor be sure to post back!! I'm right with you on that. I don't even know where to begin!

guys ive got to say its a top game and if you get to play instagib(one hit one kill). for all you counter strike players out there, there is a Unreal map based on Aztec and looks dam good as well, it came out two days after the game, the guy who made the level said its his sons best counter strike map, he made it so when his son plays Unreal he feels at home when i kicks his ass.:D

Hey, Jiggy, do you know of any 'low poly count' maps? The standard maps look great, but I'd also like to see a map that doesn't slow down the game because of some darn "cool-looking" pillar with a million polygons.
I have the graphics about as low as I can stand, and I'm still getting an overall frame rate of about 25 (my estimation not a benchmark). I ain't goin' back to 640 x 480 and ya can't make me!!

I hope you don't mind if I take you back a few years to the original UT to ask these questions. (I was following this thread because the graphics of UT 2003 caught my eye in a recent mag issue) I was just given a copy of the original and started playing in the single player mode. I started banging around the other night with it and got interested quickly.
I have found that - The "arena" is a level where there are no exits and you are trying to frag your opponents to win the level then ascend thru each level?
Now, what happens when you get to the deathmatch in the single person mode? Is that it for the game after you win?
I realize this is a ultimately a multiplayer game but are there other modes of play other than these 2?
Just trying to figger it out. I think I can understand the popularity easily enough!

There were so many releases of the game...I have Unreal Tournament as opposed to Unreal or UT Game Of The Year Edition....anywho:
By now you have probably figured out that after you complete three levels of Deathmatch...a new gametype becomes available to you...Domination...after completing 3 levels of this...Capture The Flag...then Assault and finally the Challenges (I might have CTF & Assault swapped can't remember).
As far as each game type...there are several maps/levels to complete...you will know when you complete all levels for each gametype..I'm not gonna say how you will know ;)
Post back here when you defeat Xan....muhahahaha!
Edit: My kids bought me UT2K3 for my birthday and it is sweet...I can't believe how well it runs with my GF2 MX 400 32MB with older Dets!

Ditto to all of what bassvax said...
I have the Game of the Year Edition of UT and love it. The single player tourney is fun and challenging. Xan is ROUGH! I musta tried beating that level 100 times before winning. That was after I flew through the campaign... Anyhow, enjoy it! It's a great game.
Dilsburger... Also look into the Chaos UT mod. There's one that comes with the GOTYE but there's a newer one online for d/l. Kewl weapons and levels. Just FYI, the explosive crossbow rocks and watch out for me with the RPB! MWHAHAHA! "HEAD SHOT!"
Anyhow, as much as I loved the old UT, I have to say I like the new one lots better. Tokara Forest, Face 3 and Lost Faith are some awesome maps. And maps like Magma and Face 3 have origins in the original UT. Fun to see how the levels have morphed.
K, back to fragging on my home LAN. Wishing you all happy frags!

This is for Saphalline and anyone else interested in constructing maps using UnrealED and UnrealED 2.0. I found a great site with lots of info including a guide to the basics of map building. Great for newbies. (like me!) Anyhow, enough rambling. The site is www.leveldesigner.com. The basic building doc is called "Basic Construction Phase One." There are other docs, but that should get ya started...

Yea i got it as well but i think my crappy little geforce2 64MB cant handle the game to well. Probably Upgrade to A TI geforce or something who knows. Yeah awesome game , Quake still rules though. And DOOM3 should smoke it all out. Also played online for the first time, and sad to say i got smoked. Finally got my cable modem. Btw how to you turn invisible?

How do u access the console? same as UT? ~
Nice command list ;)
diurnal, I have the same problem...I did finish the game last night though :D I have a GF2 MX 400 32MB with some older (older is better for win 98) det drivers and I found all the low-grav maps gave me a rough time. The forest map and the other high-in-the-sky map really sucked in action fights. Time for a GF4 or 3 at least.
I will tell you that Malcom is NO XAN! No matter what difficulty mode you played UT on...XAN was a bear to beat in UT.

Whats the best online site to game, im using gamespy, but i figure there are others. Other night i could have one!!! Would had been first time every BUT NO ... I was lagging so bad i quit the game, and i finally had competition i could beat. I think it was me that was lagging because the server was a low ping server. Or my memory ran out, cause i would shoot and 5 seconds later i would see the vapor trail.
Well it really dont matter if you are lagging bad , if you have the redeemer in your hand every one is toast.

If you are talking about UT or UT2K3 those games have their own browsers to connect with servers...no third party necessary :D
I gave up on most other games...didnt care much for WON or Gamespy...MSN Gaming zone does some game hosting too (all kinds-used to play Rogue Spear via it).
