Are these really useful? I want to boost my onlinegaming connection using my measly 56k modem conn. WIll an internet accelerator work? If so, what would you suggest? thanks!

I have read that they do work to optimize settings for your connection and can speed things up. However, they also occasionally destabilize your system and often contain adware or spyware. If you decide to try one, you might want to also install Adaware or Spybot Search & Destroy to make sure you don't have an unwelcome guest.

I don't have a recommendation for a good one, but I am sure others will.

The premise behind them is to optimise your settings, that idea works, but as a whole the programs themselves, don't.

You can easily achieve the same results by doing it for free, yourself......but then like Budfred suggested the possibility of seriously destablizing your system is very real.

Also what version of Windows are you running?

Most of them are for Windows 95, they will work in 98/ME but in 2k or XP different settings need to be altered and often it is best to just let Windows handle it...
