1. did you have a serial mouse installed before "if so you have to get rid of all evidence of that one first"
2.Is this a new mouse or a second hand mouse? "have you tried it on an other comp"
3.are the ports configured correctly?
4.Are there any conflicts in devise mgr
5.Are there any old mouse drivers in there (ghost drivers) you'll find these in safe mode?
5.Buy a PS/2 mouse

No this is not a new mouse. It is the one that came with it. No I haven't tryed it on another computer. It was working and then just stopped. I tryed a ps/2 but nothing seems to work in the ps/2 port. The device manager says the mouse is installed, but has problems.Should I just erase all traces then reinstall? I'll check safe mode.

well then I'm taking it this is an older comp. maybe a 486 or 386 have you had some repair work done on this?? Starting to sound like a com.port cable or the port it's self..I could be wrong on this.
Do you know what is sharing the IRQ with this mouse?

Yes it is an old computer, about a 96 model. A 486, no I don't know much about the IQR address thing but I think you may be right about the port being bad,be cause PS/2 port won't work. We bought the computer just to for learning on. The only repairs that have been done to is 2 new drivers, one for the modem and one for the sound card. But I would really like to have a mouse to work on it.

I plugged the mouse into my computer that I am on right now and it picked it up and it works without even adding a driver so i know it is not the mouse.

Your going to have to get into the CMOS and make sure that the serial port is "not disabled". Seems it was working before and then all of a sudden it didn't the cmos battery maybe on the way out and the settings have changed?

If the CMOS is ok, it may be a bad port and you may need to get a serial port card to put in an expansion slot. This would reestablish the use of the mouse, but would probably cost about $15-20.

Yeah I believe we have a port problem,it is the only explaination.Because it just all of the sudden quit, and the puter won't detect it at all. Any mouse! I don't know what else to try.:( :( I have checked the bios and cmos and everything is ok there.Help! oh well.

If you want to keep using the same mouse, then get an expansion card with a Serial port and install it. If you would like to switch to a PS2 mouse, you could buy an expansion card for that. Either way it would get you going again if the Serial port is actually the problem. Either way, you can probably find the card for less than $20.
